How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Minnesota as an LCSW

Serving as a clinical supervisor in Minnesota allows Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) to make a meaningful impact on the next generation of professionals. If you’re looking to step into a leadership role, it’s essential to understand the Minnesota clinical supervisor requirements—covering eligibility, training, and continuing education expectations—to ensure you remain compliant with the Minnesota Board of Social Work.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

To supervise individuals working toward clinical licensure in Minnesota, you must:

  • Hold an active Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) license in good standing.
  • Have at least 2,000 hours of post-licensure social work experience, including 1,000 hours in clinical practice after obtaining LICSW status.
  • Complete 30 hours of supervision training before providing supervision, either through:
    • Coursework from an accredited college or university, or
    • Continuing education that complies with Minnesota Statutes §§ 148E.130 and 148E.145

Continuing education used to meet this requirement must also follow § 148E.130, Subd. 1(4), which limits how many CE hours can be earned through independent learning—defined in § 148E.010, Subd. 7(d) as self-paced study without live interaction (e.g., on-demand courses, research, or presentations). In practice, this means only half of the 30 hours may be completed via non-interactive formats. The remaining hours must be completed through interactive or synchronous learning, such as live webinars or in-person sessions.

🔄 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements

To maintain your ability to supervise, Minnesota also requires ongoing supervision-related CE.

Minnesota Statute § 148E.130.(a) states that LCSWs and other licensees “Must complete at least 40 clock hours of continuing education in each two-year licensure renewal period. At least six clock hours must be in supervision if the licensee provides supervision.”

Of the 40 required hours, all licensees need 2 hours in social work ethics and 4 hours in cultural responsiveness.

Additionally, Minnesota limits how many CE hours can be completed through non-interactive or self-paced study: no more than half of the total CE (i.e., 20 of the 40 hours) may be earned through independent learning. The supervision-specific hours must directly relate to supervision theory or practice to ensure supervisors remain competent, ethical, and effective in their role.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

Even experienced LICSWs can encounter issues that jeopardize supervision hours. Be sure to avoid the following:

  • Incomplete or missing documentation of supervision sessions
  • Supervisors not meeting eligibility requirements at the time supervision is provided (e.g., lacking the 30-hour training or required experience)

When in doubt, consult the board or review statutes directly to stay in compliance.

📘 How the Telehealth Certification Institute Helps You Meet Supervision CE Requirements

At the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI), we offer flexible, high-quality continuing education (CE) courses designed specifically for behavioral health professionals—including Minnesota LCSWs seeking board-compliant supervision training. Please note that TCI provides continuing education courses only, not university-level training.

🧩 Recommended Courses

  • 15 CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle
To partially meet Minnesota’s supervision CE requirements, we offer the 15 CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle. This non-interactive course bundle covers key topics such as ethics, telesupervision, and supervision methods—making it a helpful option for fulfilling up to half of the 30-hour initial supervision training requirement, in alignment with Minnesota’s independent learning limits.

⚠️ This bundle does not fulfill Minnesota’s required 4 hours in cultural responsiveness or 2 hours in social work ethics. Additional CE coursework is needed to meet those requirements.

  • Individual Supervision CE Courses
To fulfill the 6-hour supervision CE requirement for license renewal, explore our selection of individual CE courses. Topics include ethics, reflective supervision, documentation, multicultural supervision, and more—perfect for satisfying Minnesota’s renewal requirements under §148E.130.

  • Clinical Supervision Certificate Program
Our Clinical Supervision Certificate Program offers 49 hours of expert-led instruction, featuring in-depth modules and a digital certificate upon completion. In Minnesota, it can be used to fulfill up to half of either the 30-hour initial supervision training requirement or the 40-hour CE renewal cycle, in accordance with the state's limit on independent learning.

The CSC includes 1.5 CE hours in cultural competency but does not independently satisfy Minnesota’s full social work ethics or cultural responsiveness CE requirements.

  • Cultural Competence & Humility CE Courses
Minnesota requires 4 hours in cultural responsiveness as part of each licensure renewal cycle. TCI offers dedicated Cultural Competence & Humility CE courses that licensees may use to complete the remaining required cultural competency hours beyond those included in supervision-focused programs

  • ✅ Ethics CE Courses
Minnesota requires 2 hours in social work ethics as part of each licensure renewal cycle. TCI offers dedicated Ethics CE courses that licensees may use to meet this requirement.

The following self-paced, online courses appear to align with Minnesota’s ethics CE criteria—though we strongly encourage licensees to verify course eligibility with the Minnesota Board of Social Work before applying them toward renewal:

  • Live Webinars
Real-time, instructor-led CE courses that qualify as synchronous learning. These are ideal for fulfilling the remaining CE hours that cannot be completed through independent learning, in accordance with § 148E.010, Subd. 7(d).
