How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Missouri as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
If you're a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Missouri, serving as a clinical supervisor allows you to support emerging professionals, sharpen your expertise, and strengthen the mental health workforce. However, Missouri’s supervision requirements are detailed and must be fully met before supervision begins, or the supervisee’s hours may not count toward licensure.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
Under Missouri regulation 20 CSR 2233-2.021, to be recognized as a supervisor, you must document the following:
Educational qualifications
You must hold a graduate degree (master’s, specialist, or doctoral) majoring in marriage and family therapy—or a closely related mental health discipline—from a regionally accredited institution.
Post-graduate clinical experience
At least five years of clinical experience providing marriage and family therapy—not including practicums or internships from your degree—is required.
Supervision credentials
For supervision taking place in Missouri, you must also demonstrate one of the following:
A current, active professional license held for at least two years. Acceptable license types include MFT, professional counselor, psychologist, clinical social worker, or psychiatrist; inactive, provisional, expired, temporary, or retired licenses do not qualify.
Designation as an AAMFT Approved Supervisor (or Supervisor Candidate).
Document at least 200 hours of clinical supervision experience, in accordance with 20 CSR 2233-2.021. This must include:
Supervision of individuals pursuing licensure as professional counselors, psychologists, clinical social workers, or MFTs, or graduate practicum/internship students.
At least 100 hours must involve supervision grounded in systems theory and MFT.
Additionally, you must have at least 1 graduate semester hour in MFT supervision or 15 CE hours in a structured supervision training series specifically relating to marriage and family therapy.
And at least 20 hours of supervision-of-supervision (also known as “supervision training,” focusing on developing your supervisory skills in theory, ethics, and supervision practice).
🔄 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements
To maintain your LMFT license—and therefore your eligibility as a clinical supervisor—you must complete 40 contact hours of continuing education before your license expiration date. At least 20 of these hours must be formal continuing education hours.
Formal CE includes activities such as graduate-level coursework (not required for licensure), live or recorded workshops, verified professional conference attendance, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and teaching approved MFT content.
Self-study activities (e.g., reading, videos, unverified webinars) can be used for up to 20 of the 40 required hours.
Supervision-related CE is not specifically mandated, but including it in your training plan can help you stay current with best practices and strengthen your supervision skills.
⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Improper documentation: Keep a thorough record—supervision agreements, date logs, session topics, and evaluations must be well organized.
Supervisor not meeting requirements at start: Eligibility must be met before the first supervision session begins—not after you’ve already started supervising.
📘 How the Telehealth Certification Institute Helps You Meet Supervision CE Requirements
The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers continuing education courses designed to strengthen your supervision skills and fulfill Missouri’s initial training and license renewal requirements.
⚠️ Note: TCI provides continuing education courses only and does not offer university-level graduate coursework.
✅ Recommended Courses
Explore our live, interactive webinar courses—may be able to support Missouri’s 15-hour supervision training requirement (applicants must confirm that their chosen Webinar topic complies with 20 CSR 2233-2.021.1(C)(3)(B) - structured supervision series relating to LMFT supervision). Webinars can help you earn “formal” CE toward LMFT license renewal (Missouri requires 40 contact hours per renewal cycle, with at least 20 hours in formal CE).
Clinical Supervision Certificate Program
Our comprehensive Clinical Supervision Certificate (CSC) Program provides 49 CE hours and covers all essential clinical supervision competencies. For Missouri LMFT renewal, recorded/self-study learning is typically limited to 20 of the 40 required contact hours, so Missouri licensees can generally apply up to 20 CSC hours toward renewal and complete the remaining hours through qualifying formal CE (e.g., live trainings with verification). Always confirm how your board classifies recorded online courses.
