How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Missouri (LCSW Guide)
Serving as a clinical supervisor in Missouri empowers Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) to shape the next generation of professionals. But supervising isn't just about leadership—it's a regulated role requiring specific qualifications. This guide walks you through Missouri clinical supervisor requirements, including training mandates, CE expectations, and pitfalls, so you can supervise with confidence and compliance.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
To provide clinical supervision for licensure in Missouri, LCSWs must meet all the requirements outlined in 20 CSR 2263-2.031:
- Educational Requirement: Hold a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in social work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
- Licensure Requirement: Be licensed in Missouri as a bachelor, master, clinical, or advanced macro social worker—or be similarly licensed in another state with equivalent standards as determined by the board.
- Experience Requirement: Have at least five (5) years of post-licensure experience.
- Supervision Training: Complete a 16-hour continuing education course in clinical supervision that includes the following required components:
- The supervisory relationship and process
- Supervision of the supervisee’s practice
- Professional relationships
- Work content
- Evaluation and lifelong learning
- Professional responsibility
🔄 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements
As of now, Missouri does not require any supervision-specific continuing education (CE) to renew your status as a clinical supervisor. However, all Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) — including those serving as supervisors — must fulfill the general CE requirements outlined by the Missouri State Committee for Social Workers.
According to 20 CSR 2263-2.082, LCSWs must complete:
✅ 30 total CE hours per renewal cycle (2 Year)
Including:
- 3 hours in ethics
- 2 hours in suicide assessment, referral, treatment, and management
These hours must come from approved sources (this includes TCI) and contribute to professional competence.
While supervision training is not mandatory for renewal, many clinical supervisors voluntarily pursue ongoing education in supervision to:
- Stay current with best practices
- Strengthen supervisory relationships
- Meet evolving ethical and cultural expectations
Engaging in high-quality supervision CE helps support both professional development and the quality of care delivered by supervisees.
⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Many qualified clinicians unintentionally jeopardize their supervisee’s licensure path due to these preventable mistakes:
- Improper Documentation: Maintain thorough, timely supervision logs signed by both parties.
- Supervisor Doesn’t Meet State Requirements: You must have your full five years of post-licensure experience and completed 16 CE hours before supervising. Supervision conducted prior to meeting these standards may be rejected.
