How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Montana as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
If you’re a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Montana, serving as a clinical supervisor is a powerful way to support the next generation of therapists, strengthen the profession, and grow your own expertise. However, Montana has specific supervision requirements that must be fully met before supervision begins—or your supervisee’s hours may not count toward licensure.
This guide outlines how to qualify to serve as a supervisor in Montana, reviews the supervision training requirements, explains annual CE expectations, highlights mistakes, and provides information about CE training options from the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI).
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
The Montana Board of Behavioral Health sets forth supervisor qualifications in Administrative Rule of Montana (ARM) 24.219.421(2):
To qualify you must:
Hold an active license in good standing as an LMFT, licensed psychologist, or licensed and board-certified psychiatrist.
And meet one of the following criteria:
Have at least 3 years of post-licensure experience, OR
Complete board-approved supervision training (minimum 1 graduate semester credit OR 20 hours of board-approved supervision CE).

🔄 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements
While Montana does not require any supervision-specific continuing education to maintain status as a clinical supervisor, you must still meet the state’s general CE requirements to keep your LMFT license active—and remain eligible to supervise.
From ARM 24.219.2102(1) and (4):
“Licensees are required to obtain 20 hours of continuing education (CE) annually, prior to renewal. Of the 20 hours: (a) a minimum of two hours must relate to suicide prevention.”

CE Content Standards – ARM 24.219.435(6):
Licensees are responsible for selecting quality CE programs that:
Relate to MFT scope of practice
Go beyond basic professional education; update knowledge and advances in the profession
Contribute to ethical, clinical, or technical competence
Montana CE Notice: Montana does not pre-approve CE providers. TCI courses may qualify toward CE requirements if the content meets the standards outlined in ARM 24.219.435(6). Licensees are responsible for ensuring compliance.
⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Even qualified supervisors can run into issues that cause supervisee hours to be rejected. The most notable pitfalls include:
1. Improper Documentation
Failure to keep detailed records—including signed supervision agreements, accurate supervision logs, and periodic evaluations—can jeopardize a supervisee’s application.2. Supervisor Not Meeting Requirements at the Time of Supervision
Your eligibility must be established before the first supervision session—not partway through the supervision period.
📘 How the Telehealth Certification Institute Helps You Meet Supervision CE Requirements
The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers continuing education courses focused on clinical supervision topics such as ethics, documentation, supervision models, and cultural competence.
Montana allows supervisors to complete supervision training through:
One graduate semester hour in MFT supervision, or
20 CE hours in structured supervision training
TCI offers CE courses that cover supervision-related topics that may be relevant to these requirements.
⚠️ Important: Montana does not pre-approve CE providers. TCI is not approved for CE hours in Montana. Licensees are responsible for determining whether any CE course they take meets the content standards outlined in ARM 24.219.435(6) and should retain documentation in case of audit.
🔎 Please note: TCI provides CE training only and does not offer university-level graduate coursework.
