How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Nevada (LCSW Guide)
Serving as a clinical supervisor in Nevada is a meaningful way for Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) to mentor rising professionals and contribute to the strength of the behavioral health workforce. However, supervision is also a regulated responsibility. This guide explains Nevada’s clinical supervisor requirements—covering who qualifies, what training is recommended, and pitfalls to avoid—so you can supervise with confidence and compliance.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
According to Nevada Administrative Code (NAC), only qualified professionals may supervise social work interns. Here's what the Nevada Board of Examiners for Social Workers requires:
- License type: Supervisors must hold an active clinical social work license (LCSW) issued by the Board.
- Experience: Supervisors must have at least 3 years of full-time clinical practice.
- Professional standing: Supervisors must be in good standing with no disciplinary restrictions.

🎓 Initial Training or CE Requirements
Nevada does not currently mandate specific supervision CE hours to serve as a clinical supervisor. However, supervisors are still expected to be familiar with supervisory best practices, ethical responsibilities, and clinical oversight procedures. Supervisors must also hold an active clinical social work license (LCSW), which may have its own CE requirements.
❗Even though no training is mandated, completing formal CE in supervision is strongly encouraged to ensure quality guidance and reduce liability risks.
🔁 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements
Nevada does not require supervision-specific CE for supervisor renewal. However, according to Nevada Administrative Code 641B.187, all LCSWs must complete 36 CE hours per renewal cycle (every 2 years), including:
- 4 hours in ethics
- 2 hours in suicide prevention and awareness
- 12 hours in your field of practice
- 6 hours in cultural competency and diversity, equity and inclusion

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Many LCSWs lose supervision credit or face delays due to avoidable errors. Here’s what to watch out for:
- Improper documentation: Incomplete supervision records or failure to use board-approved forms can disqualify hours.
- Supervisor noncompliance: If a supervisor doesn’t meet eligibility standards at any point, all supervision under them may be invalidated.
