How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in New Hampshire (LCSW Guide)
Serving as a clinical supervisor in New Hampshire empowers Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) to shape the next generation of professionals in the behavioral health field. However, clinical supervision is a regulated role, and understanding the state’s specific requirements is key to supervising confidently and compliantly. This guide walks you through the official New Hampshire clinical supervisor requirements, including eligibility criteria, required training, CE expectations, and pitfalls to avoid.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
To serve as a clinical supervisor in New Hampshire, LCSWs must comply with New Hampshire Administrative Rule Mhp 302.03.
According to Mhp 302.03(a), the supervisor must:
- Hold appropriate credentials:
- Be licensed in New Hampshire in the same mental health discipline as the licensure sought by the supervisee.
- Have engaged in active clinical practice for at least 2 years following licensure.
- Complete one of the following educational options:
- A graduate-level course in clinical supervision,
OR - A clinical supervision certificate approved by one of the following:
- Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE)
- National Association of Social Workers (NASW)
- American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA)
- American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT)
- A graduate-level course in clinical supervision,
- Complete 12 continuing education hours in clinical supervision prior to entering the supervisory relationship, meeting the requirements stated in Mhp 402.02(a)(1).

🎓 Initial Training or CE Requirements
Before providing supervision, LCSWs in New Hampshire must complete:
- 12 CE hours in clinical supervision, in addition to either:
- A graduate-level supervision course, or
- A qualifying supervision certificate from NASW, AMHCA, AAMFT, or ACPE.
The 12 CE hours must be obtained before beginning any supervisory relationship and must meet the standards outlined in Mhp 402.02(a)(1)—typically requiring CE from Category A providers such as professional associations or accredited academic institutions.
🔁 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements
According to Mhp 402.01, all LCSWs in New Hampshire must complete 40 continuing education (CE) hours every two years for license renewal. The specific requirements include:
- 6 CE hours in ethics
- 3 CE hours in suicide prevention, and
- At least 6 CE hours in clinical supervision for board-approved supervisors
These CE hours must be completed from Category A providers, as outlined in Mhp 402.02.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Avoid these issues that may delay licensure or invalidate supervision hours:
- Supervising before completing required training: All components (graduate course or certificate plus 12 CE hours) must be completed before supervision starts.
- Using non–Category A CE providers: Only CE from approved providers counts toward the required 12 hours.
- Insufficient post-licensure experience: Supervisors must have two full years of post-licensure clinical practice.
- Lack of documentation: Maintain accurate supervision logs including CE certificates and session summaries.
