How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in New Jersey as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in New Jersey as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

Serving as a clinical supervisor in New Jersey is a meaningful way to advance your career, guide new professionals, and strengthen the field of marriage and family therapy. The New Jersey State Board of Marriage and Family Therapy Examiners has clear rules outlining who qualifies as a supervisor and how to maintain that status.

Below, we’ll break down the New Jersey clinical supervisor requirements, the continuing education rules, and pitfalls to avoid—with citations to the official regulations.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

To qualify as a clinical supervisor in New Jersey, you must:

  • Hold an active New Jersey license as an MFT (or another Board-recognized license with equivalent graduate-level training).

  • Have at least five full-time years of professional MFT practice experience (part-time work may be prorated).

  • Possess a graduate degree in marriage and family therapy, or demonstrate equivalent coursework and training from a Board-recognized program.
👉 If your graduate degree is in a related field (such as counseling, social work, or psychology), you must also demonstrate coursework and training substantially equivalent to a marriage and family therapy degree or from a COAMFTE-accredited program.

🔄 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements

While there are no continuing education (CE) requirements specifically designated for clinical supervisors in New Jersey, all MFTs—including those who supervise—must meet the standard renewal criteria to keep their license active and remain eligible to supervise.

To renew your license every two years, you must complete:

  • 40 CE hours

  • At least 20 hours must be completed via face-to-face instruction

  • A minimum of 3 hours in social and cultural competence

  • At least 5 of the 40 CE hours must be in ethical and legal standards related to marriage and family therapy, pursuant to N.J.A.C. 13:34-5.2(c).

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Incomplete documentation of supervision hours
Missing signatures, dates, or logs can cause hours to be rejected.

  • Supervisors not meeting requirements at the time supervision takes place
Ensure that you meet all supervisor eligibility requirements before beginning supervision, as eligibility obtained after supervision does not apply retroactively.

  • Assuming general CE fulfills supervision CE
Only CE courses specifically focused on supervision meet the competency training requirements for supervisors.
