How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in New Jersey (LCSW Guide)
For Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) in New Jersey, serving as a clinical supervisor is more than a professional milestone—it’s an opportunity to mentor the next generation of behavioral health professionals. But supervision is also a regulated responsibility. Understanding New Jersey’s clinical supervisor requirements ensures that your guidance is both effective and legally valid. This guide outlines the official eligibility criteria, supervision CE expectations, and mistakes to avoid.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
To supervise social workers working toward clinical licensure in New Jersey, you must meet all of the following qualifications, in accordance with New Jersey Administrative Code 13:44G-8.1(b):
- Hold a current Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) license issued by the New Jersey State Board of Social Work Examiners
- Have been licensed as an LCSW for at least three years
- Complete at least 20 continuing education (CE) credits of postgraduate coursework specifically related to clinical supervision approved by the New Jersey State Board of Social Work Examiners, before beginning supervision
⚠️ Important New Jersey–Specific Requirement for Supervision Education
New Jersey imposes strict requirements on the supervision education used to qualify as a clinical supervisor.
Under N.J.A.C. 13:44G-8.1(c)(2), supervision coursework must:
- Be submitted to and approved by the New Jersey State Board of Social Work Examiners
- Be taught in person
- Be taught by an LCSW who independently meets New Jersey’s supervisor eligibility requirements
As a result:
- Online, self-paced, or asynchronous supervision CE does not qualify toward the initial 20-credit requirement in New Jersey.
- Continuing education providers that do not offer Board-approved, in-person supervision coursework cannot be used to meet this requirement.
- LCSWs are responsible for confirming Board approval before enrolling in supervision education.

🔄 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements
New Jersey does not require supervision-specific CE to continue serving as a supervisor after meeting the initial 20-credit requirement.
However, New Jersey Administrative Code 13:44G-6.2(a) states that in order to maintain your LCSW license, you must meet the state’s general continuing education (CE) requirements, which are:
40 CE credits every two years, including:
- At least 20 credits in clinical practice
- At least 5 credits in ethics
- At least 3 credits in social and cultural competence
CE Carryover Rule
If an LCSW earns more than 40 CE credits during a biennial renewal period, up to 8 surplus credits may be carried forward into the succeeding biennial period, as permitted under N.J.A.C. 13:44G-6.2(a)(1).

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Even experienced clinicians can make mistakes that jeopardize a supervisee’s progress. Avoid these supervision errors:
- Supervision hours not counting due to incomplete or incorrect documentation
- Supervisor not meeting CE or licensure requirements before starting supervision
Document all supervision sessions carefully and confirm that all eligibility requirements are met before beginning any supervisory relationship.
