How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in New York (LCSW Guide)

Serving as a clinical supervisor as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in New York is a significant career milestone. This role carries the important responsibility of delivering ethical, effective clinical supervision to LMSWs working toward licensure. To ensure compliance and professional excellence, this guide outlines New York’s clinical supervisor requirements—including qualifications, CE mandates, and documentation rules. You'll also learn about pitfalls to avoid—so you can supervise confidently and ethically, in full compliance with state regulations.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

To supervise a social worker pursuing LCSW licensure in New York, you must meet the qualification standards set by the NY State Education Department (NYSED).

A qualified clinical supervisor must:

  • Be licensed and registered in one of the following professions in New York State:
    • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
    • Licensed Psychologist*
    • Licensed Physician*
  • Have a minimum of 3 years of post-licensure experience providing diagnosis and psychotherapy.
  • Not be related to the supervisee (dual relationships may be considered unprofessional conduct under Education Law and Regents Rules).
  • If licensed outside of New York, submit Form 4Q – Clinical Supervisor Approval Application, and be licensed in one of the three professions listed above.

*Psychologists and physicians must be able to document training in psychotherapy either through their graduate degree program or through a post-degree training institute.

🔄 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements

Up to 12 of those hours may be in clinical supervision or related areas.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

Avoid these errors that can lead to supervision hours being rejected:

  • Supervisors who don’t meet NYSED qualifications (e.g., not licensed as an LCSW in New York or failing to submit Form 4Q if out-of-state).
  • Dual relationships (e.g., supervising a relative), which may violate ethics rules.
  • Improper documentation of client contact hours or supervision logs.
