How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in North Carolina (LCSW Guide)
Are you a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in North Carolina looking to mentor rising professionals and advance your career? Serving as a clinical supervisor in North Carolina allows you to guide the next generation of social workers while deepening your own clinical expertise. To ensure the supervision hours you provide are valid and compliant, it's essential to meet all North Carolina clinical supervisor requirements. This comprehensive guide covers how to qualify as a clinical supervisor in NC, including eligibility criteria, required continuing education (CE) hours, supervisor renewal guidelines, mistakes to avoid, and trusted training resources from TCI to support your professional development.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
According to the North Carolina Social Work Certification and Licensure Board (NCSWCLB):
To supervise a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate (LCSWA), you must:
- Hold an active North Carolina LCSW license in good standing.
- Have a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from a CSWE-accredited program.
- Possess at least two years of full-time clinical social work experience post-LCSW licensure.
- Be free of disciplinary sanctions by the Board or other professional organizations.
- Provide face-to-face supervision at a minimum 1:30 ratio (1 hour per 30 hours of clinical practice), at least every 2 weeks.
- Use Board-approved forms to verify employment, job duties, and supervision agreements before beginning supervision.
These expectations are outlined by the Board in both the “Qualifications of the Supervisor” and “SECTION III: To be completed by the LCSW clinical supervisor” of the Supervision Manual.
🔄 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements
There is no supervision-specific CE requirement to become or remain a supervisor in North Carolina. However, all LCSWs—whether supervisors or not—must meet the following general continuing education (CE) requirements for license renewal, as outlined in the 2025 Renewal Affidavit:
- Total CE Hours: 40 clock hours every 2 years (30 hours if your renewal cycle is under 2 years)
- Ethics Requirement: Minimum 4 hours of CE must cover social work ethics
- Distance Learning Limit: Up to 20 hours (50%) may be obtained via ASWB- or NASW-approved online or home-study courses; however, live interactive webinars are considered face-to-face and do not count against this limit
- Pro-rating: If your renewal term is less than 2 years, CE hours are pro-rated (e.g., 30 hrs for 1-year cycle, 10 hrs for 6-month cycle)
- No carry-over: CE hours cannot be carried into the next renewal cycle
- Board Audits: You must maintain records for a minimum of 3 years; the Board does not pre-approve courses but will audit your documented CE for compliance
⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
- Supervision not approved before starting clinical practice
Supervisees must submit the Employment Verification Form, Position Statement on Clinical Supervision, and Emergency Crisis Plan before beginning any clinical hours. - Improper supervision ratio
Supervisors must maintain a 1:30 supervision ratio and meet at least every two weeks. Falling short can result in hours being disqualified. - Exceeding telehealth supervision limits
Only 50 hours of remote supervision (video-based) are allowed unless pre-approved in writing by the Board. - Unqualified supervision
Supervision by someone who does not meet the 2-year post-LCSW requirement, or who is under Board sanction, can invalidate all hours supervised.
