How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Oregon (LCSW Guide)

How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Oregon (LCSW Guide)

If you're an LCSW in Oregon looking to serve as a clinical supervisor, this guide breaks down the Oregon clinical supervisor requirements, supervision training, CE expectations, and pitfalls—based directly on the Oregon Board of Licensed Social Workers (BLSW) rules.

Although the Board does not require a specific CE provider or program, the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) provides ASWB-approved continuing education (CE) courses that fulfill Oregon’s supervisor training requirements—helping you strengthen your supervision competence, maintain compliance, and mentor with confidence.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

According to the Oregon Board of Licensed Social Workers, the minimum qualifications to serve as a clinical supervisor are:

  • Must be a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), clinical psychologist, or psychiatrist licensed in Oregon (the latter two are allowed to supervise for up to half of the required supervision hours).

  • Must have completed two years of licensed clinical practice before starting supervision.

  • Must maintain an Active or Semi-Retired LCSW license, which requires completing at least 6 hours of general CE and renewing your license every two years (separate from supervision CE requirements).

  • Must have completed and reported at least 15 hours of initial supervision CE within the 5 years before beginning supervision.

  • Must pass the Oregon Rules and Laws exam within the last 5 years—and renew it every 5 years.

  • Must be competent in the specialty and population the CSWA will serve.

  • Must not be a spouse, relative, of close personal relation, or former therapist of the supervisee.

All qualifications must be submitted to the Board by email (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or fax.

🔁 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements

To maintain supervisor status, you must complete at least 6 hours of continuing education in supervision every 5 years.

These hours are in addition to the general CE required for LCSW license renewal.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Improper documentation – Missing or incomplete records (dates, format, topics) may disqualify supervision.

  • Insufficient CE – Failing to complete and report 15 hours before starting, or missing the 6-hour renewal CE, jeopardizes both supervisor and supervisee progress.

  • Ineligible supervisor – Supervising before accruing 2 years of clinical practice or while lacking an Active/Semi-Retired license is a violation.

📘 How the Telehealth Certification Institute Helps You Meet Supervision CE Requirements

The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers a comprehensive catalog of ASWB-approved supervision courses designed to help Oregon LCSWs meet both the initial 15-hour requirement and the renewal requirement, which requires 6 or more hours of CE.

✅ Board Recognition

The Oregon Board of Licensed Social Workers has confirmed that courses completed through any ASWB-approved continuing education provider meet the state’s supervision training standards.

“If you are already an ASWB-approved CE provider, that is sufficient to meet the Oregon BLSW requirement for the supervisor training. However, we do require that individuals submit their completion certificate with the credentialing body listed on it. Please make sure that you not only include your organization, but also that you are approved by ASWB to provide the course as well.”
