How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Pennsylvania as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
Serving as a clinical supervisor in Pennsylvania is a major professional milestone for Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs). Supervisors provide essential mentorship, oversight, and accountability—ensuring that new therapists deliver competent and ethical care.
This guide walks you through the Pennsylvania clinical supervisor requirements, supervision-specific CE obligations, pitfalls to avoid, and the training resources available through the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI).
✅ Pennsylvania Clinical Supervisor Requirements
To serve as a clinical supervisor in Pennsylvania, you must meet one of these, pursuant to 49 Pa. Code § 48.3:
Be a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) and certified as an AAMFT Approved Supervisor or Supervisor-in-Training.
Be licensed in a related field, have a master’s degree or higher, and at least 5 years of work experience in the related field in the last 10 years.
Supervisors must also comply with Pennsylvania’s Standards for Supervisors, which establish detailed expectations regarding oversight, documentation, ethical review, accessibility, client notification, evaluation procedures, and supervisory accountability.

🔄 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements
While there are no continuing education (CE) requirements specifically for clinical supervisors in Pennsylvania, you must still complete the standard CE requirements for license renewal to keep your MFT license active — and therefore remain eligible to supervise.
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) in Pennsylvania are required to complete 30 total CE hours every two years as part of their biennial renewal cycle.
According to 49 Pa. Code § 48.32, the requirements include:
30 total CE hours per biennial renewal period.
At least 1 hour in suicide prevention (required by Act 74 of 2016).
At least 2 hours in child abuse recognition and reporting, from an approved provider (49 Pa. Code § 48.58; Act 31 of 2014).
At least 3 hours in professional ethics.
No more than 20 clock hours may be obtained through home study

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Even experienced clinicians can run into problems that prevent supervision hours from being counted. Issues include:
Improper documentation
Hours must be logged, signed, and verified according to Board requirements. Incomplete or inconsistent records may lead to hours being disqualified.Supervisor not meeting requirements
If the supervisor does not hold the required license type or experience, the Board may invalidate those supervised hours.
Careful attention to compliance helps protect both supervisors and supervisees from setbacks.
