How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Rhode Island as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
Serving as a clinical supervisor in Rhode Island is a professional milestone for Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs). Supervisors provide essential mentorship and oversight, ensuring that new clinicians deliver competent and ethical care. This article breaks down the Rhode Island clinical supervisor requirements, renewal CE obligations, pitfalls, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support you with supervision CE training.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
Rhode Island law (R.I. Gen. Laws § 5-63.2-10 and 216-RICR-40-05-11 § 11.3.6(B)) requires that clinical supervision for Marriage and Family Therapists be provided by an individual who meets the regulatory criteria for a clinical supervisor at the time supervision is provided.
To qualify, you must meet one of these pathways:
AAMFT Certification – Be certified as a supervisor by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT); OR
Licensed LMFT with Experience – Hold a Rhode Island MFT license in good standing for at least five years and have at least five years of clinical experience as a licensee; AND
Complete one graduate-level course in MFT supervision, OR
Successfully complete an MFT supervision course offered through AAMFT or RIAMFT.
These requirements ensure that supervisors not only have significant clinical experience but also formal training in the art and practice of clinical supervision.
🔄 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements
While there are no continuing education (CE) requirements specifically for clinical supervisors in Rhode Island, you must still meet the state’s CE requirements outlined in 216-RICR-40-05-11 § 11.3.12 to keep your license active — and remain eligible to supervise.
To renew their license, Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) in Rhode Island must complete 40 hours of continuing education during the two years preceding re-licensure. Within those 40 hours:
At least 20 hours must come from Category 1 programs — structured, formal educational activities such as graduate-level coursework, workshops, or accredited programs, including web-based options.
All CE must be relevant to the practice of clinical mental health counseling or marriage and family therapy.
Licensees must retain documentation (including the date, course title, instructor name, and number of CE credits) for at least four years and be prepared to submit this if selected for audit.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Even qualified supervisors sometimes encounter challenges. The most common potential pitfalls include:
Supervisees not properly registered – Only hours earned under an officially registered MFT candidate count toward licensure.
Documentation errors – Missing supervision logs, incomplete CE records, or lack of supervisor attestation can result in hours being rejected.
Supervisor qualifications not valid at the time of supervision – Supervision hours are only valid if the supervisor already meets Board requirements when the hours are provided.
Careful planning, documentation, and verification help prevent these costly mistakes.
