How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Rhode Island (LCSW Guide)
If you're a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Rhode Island looking to serve as a clinical supervisor, this guide breaks down the Rhode Island clinical supervisor requirements, supervision CE rules, and pitfalls—based directly on the official state regulations.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
To qualify as a clinical supervisor for LCSWs in Rhode Island, you must meet the requirements stated in 216-RICR-40-05-7 :
Hold an active, unrestricted license as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW).
After August 15, 2025, new LCSW applicants must satisfactorily complete a national examination as specified in 216-RICR-40-05-7.4.3(A)(5)(a) – the intermediate level of the examination administered by the ASWB or such other examination as the Board shall consider to be acceptable.
Provide structured clinical supervision that meets all the expectations outlined in Rhode Island Code 216-RICR-40-05-7.3(A)(13), including:
📅 A minimum of 2 hours of supervision every two weeks
⏱️ At least 1 hour of supervision per 20 hours of direct client contact
🧑🤝🧑 75% of supervision must be individual (1-on-1); up to 25% may be group supervision (no more than 10 supervisees at a time)
👨👩👧 Supervision cannot be provided to family members or household members
✅ Supervisors must ensure supervisees are appropriately licensed or legally exempt
Rhode Island does not require a separate application or credential to serve as a supervisor. As long as you hold LICSW licensure and meet the supervision structure requirements above, you are eligible to supervise LCSWs pursuing independent licensure.
🔁 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements
While there are no continuing education requirements specifically for clinical supervisors in Rhode Island, licensed clinical social workers must meet the state’s general continuing education (CE) requirements to keep their license active and remain eligible to supervise.
All licensed clinical social workers in Rhode Island must complete 30 hours of CE every 2 years, as stated in 216-RICR-40-05-7.4.5(E). Other requirements for earning CE hours include:
A minimum of three (3) hours in cross-cultural practice, including the alleviation of oppression
A minimum of three (3) hours in social work professional ethics
Credit may be claimed for serving as a supervisor for students duly enrolled in a program of studies at an accredited social work program at a college or university in accordance with the following:
A maximum of six (6) hours credit may be claimed during a renewal period for either the supervision of a master's level social work student or for the supervision of a bachelor's level social work student for a full academic year.
⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Even qualified supervisors can make mistakes that result in supervision hours not being counted. Here are the pitfalls to avoid:
❌ Supervising Without Meeting Format Requirements
Rhode Island requires specific supervision formats and frequencies:
- 2 hours of supervision every 2 weeks
- 1 hour per 20 hours of client contact
- 75% must be individual supervision
Failing to meet these ratios can invalidate your supervisee’s hours.
❌ Exceeding Group Supervision Limits
Group supervision is only permitted for 25% of total hours and may not include more than 10 supervisees at a time.
❌ Ineligible Supervisor
You must be a LICSW. Supervisors who do not hold this level of licensure—or who let their license lapse—may render supervision hours ineligible.
❌ Conflict of Interest
Supervising a family member or someone you live with violates the regulation. This relationship must be entirely professional.
❌ Supervisee Not Properly Licensed
Always ensure that your supervisees are either actively pursuing licensure or are legally exempt from licensure. Otherwise, their hours won’t count.
