How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in South Carolina as a Licensed Psychologist
If you’re a licensed psychologist (LP) in South Carolina and you’re interested in supervising other mental health professionals, it's essential to understand the state’s specific regulations. Serving as a clinical supervisor is a rewarding responsibility, but it comes with defined legal and ethical requirements. This guide explains the South Carolina clinical supervisor requirements for psychologists, including eligibility criteria, continuing education (CE) obligations, and pitfalls to avoid. It also highlights how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can help you meet your CE and supervision training needs.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
In South Carolina, clinical supervisors must meet specific criteria set forth in the South Carolina Code of Regulations, Chapter 100. Below is a summary of the key South Carolina LP supervision requirements:
1. Licensure and Standing
To qualify as a clinical supervisor, you must be a licensed psychologist in good standing with the South Carolina Board of Examiners in Psychology, or hold an equivalent license from another state (§ 100-1(A)(5)).
2. Competence
Supervision must be provided within the supervisor’s area of competency. You must have the training, knowledge, and skills to competently guide a supervisee in the psychological services they are providing (§ 100-1(A)(5); § 100-4(C)(1)).
3. Supervision Structure
There must be a written contractual agreement between the supervisor and supervisee outlining the terms and scope of supervision (§ 100-1(A)(5)).
Minimum Hours: At least one hour of face-to-face supervision per week, with at least 50% conducted in person.
Board Notification: The supervisor must notify the Board in writing before supervision begins and again when it concludes.
4. Experience Oversight
A supervisor may oversee no more than three (3) full-time supervisees or the equivalent. Supervisors must also maintain ongoing supervision records detailing activities, competencies, and outcomes. All written reports or communications prepared by supervisees must be reviewed, approved, and countersigned by the supervising psychologist (§ 100-8(D)(12); § 100-8(E)(4)-(5)).
5. Direct and Continuing Supervision
Supervision must be direct and ongoing, with the supervisor assuming full professional, ethical, and legal responsibility for all services rendered by the supervisee (§ 100-8(D)(2)–(4), § 100-8(E)(3)).
6. Client Protection and Disclosure
Clients must be informed that services are provided by an unlicensed supervisee under supervision and must be told the supervisor’s name and qualifications. The supervisor must have sufficient knowledge of each client (including direct contact when necessary) to ensure effective service delivery and client protection (§ 100-8(D)(8); § 100-8(D)(4)).
7. Administrative Duties
Supervisors must register all supervisees with the Board at the time of license renewal, including the supervisee’s name, qualifications, and supervision type. They must also retain supervision records for at least five years after the last date of supervision.(§ 100-8(D)(1); § 100-4(C)(7)(d)).
🔁 Ongoing Continuing Education Requirements
South Carolina does not impose separate continuing education (CE) requirements specifically for supervisors. However, all licensed psychologists — including those who supervise — must meet the general CE requirements to maintain licensure.
- Total Hours Required: Licensed psychologists in South Carolina must complete 24 approved CE credits every 2 years (biennial licensure cycle).
Category Requirements:
- At least 12 hours must be from Category A, which includes APA-approved programs, graduate-level coursework, and teaching.
- Up to 12 hours can come from Category B, which includes activities like peer supervision, non-refereed publications, and attendance at local professional meetings.
▶️ Additional CE Policies
- ❌ No Carryover: Excess CE hours beyond the required 24 cannot be carried over to the next renewal cycle.
- 📋 Reporting: Psychologists must attest to completing CE on their license renewal form and may be audited by the Board for documentation.
Supervision-related CE Activities
If you participate in peer supervision or case consultation groups, these activities may count toward your Category B CE requirements. This can be an excellent way for clinical supervisors to meet part of their CE obligations while improving their supervision skills.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Even experienced supervisors can make mistakes that result in supervision hours being disqualified or disciplinary action. Pitfalls include:
- Failing to Register Supervisees: Supervisors must register all supervisees with the Board during license renewal.
- Inadequate Documentation: Maintain detailed supervision logs, and review and countersign all supervisee records.
- Exceeding Supervisee Limits: You may supervise no more than three full-time supervisees (or equivalent) at once.
Avoiding these missteps ensures compliance and protects both the supervisee and the supervisor.
