How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Tennessee (LCSW Guide)
If you’re a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Tennessee, you may be considering the next step in your career: clinical supervision. Before you begin supervising, it’s important to understand the Tennessee clinical supervisor requirements, including license eligibility, training expectations, and potential pitfalls that could delay or invalidate your supervisees’ hours.
🧑⚖️ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
To serve as a clinical supervisor for LCSW candidates in Tennessee, you must meet all of the following criteria:
✅ Hold an active Tennessee LCSW license in good standing
✅ Have been continuously licensed as an LCSW for at least three (3) years prior to initiation of supervision, and submit documentation of this to Board administrative staff with the supervisee’s application.
✅ Complete 12 cumulative hours of continuing education (CE) related specifically to clinical or non-clinical advanced practice social work supervision
- At least 3 of these 12 hours must focus on Tennessee licensing rules
📘 Per the Tennessee Board of Social Work Licensure, this requirement may be met by completing the NASW-TN course Ethical Understanding of TN Social Work Licensure Law, available at naswtn.socialworkers.org If you are a first-time supervisor, you must complete the 12 hours before or during your first calendar year of supervision
- At least 3 of these 12 hours must focus on Tennessee licensing rules
This one-time, 12-hour CE requirement began January 1, 2023 and is a cumulative requirement—not annual. These CE hours may count toward your overall LCSW annual license renewal CE.
🧭 Supervision Structure & Hour Requirements (for LCSW candidates you supervise)
Clinical Experience Hours
The supervisee must complete 3,000 hours of clinical experience over 2–8 years from the application date.Supervision Under an LCSW
The supervisee must be under the supervision of a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and:Supervisor Contact Hours: Accumulate 100 supervisor–supervisee contact hours in addition to the 3,000 clinical hours, spaced at reasonable intervals of approximately 1 hour of supervision per 30 hours of clinical experience, spread throughout the experience period.
Individual vs. Group: At least 60 of the 100 hours must be individual supervision; no more than 40 may be group supervision, and group settings may include no more than four (4) supervisees.
Tele/Synchronous Technologies: No more than 75% of individual supervision hours may be obtained through teleconferencing, visual multimedia, or video conferencing technology.
Supervisor License Type: Both individual and group supervision must be provided by an LCSW.
In Addition To Other Activities: The supervision time requirements are in addition to:
(i) any overall administrative supervision; and
(ii) any group seminar or group consultation deemed appropriate.Applicants from Another State (Licensure by Examination in Tennessee)
Applicants must provide evidence of supervision by an LCSW (or LAPSW if applying for LAPSW) or the equivalent in the state where supervision was performed. The supervisor must have passed the ASWB Clinical exam or Advanced Generalist exam. If the supervisor is not licensed or the state has no licensure provision, the applicant must obtain the prerequisite supervision from an LCSW or LAPSW licensed in Tennessee.
🚫 Supervisor Restrictions & Conflict-of-Interest Limits
Discipline Limitation (Who qualifies):
Only LCSWs (and LAPSWs when applicable to LAPSW pathways) may serve as supervisors for LCSW/LAPSW licensure. No members of other mental health or medical disciplines qualify as supervisors for these licenses.Conflict of Interest – Disallowed Relationships:
Supervision will not be accepted if provided by the applicant’s parents, spouse, former spouse, siblings, children, cousins, in-laws (present or former), step-children, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, employees, or anyone sharing the same household.Compensation Clarification:
For purposes of this rule, a supervisor is not considered the applicant’s employee if the only compensation received consists of payment for actual supervisory hours.

🔁 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements
Tennessee does not require supervision-specific CE to maintain supervisor eligibility. However, to keep your LCSW license active (and remain eligible to supervise), you must meet the following general CE requirements every two (2) years:
30 total CE hours, including:
6 hours in ethics
1 hour on Tennessee laws and rules
⚠️ Please note: The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) does not offer a course that fulfills the 1-hour Tennessee laws and rules requirement.2 hours in suicide prevention (every 4 years)
Up to 2/3 of CE may be completed via multimedia or distance learning. Real-time virtual courses (synchronous) are considered in-person.
You must retain CE records for 4 years and provide them upon request. Use of CE Broker is optional but encouraged.
