How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Utah as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)

How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Utah as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)

If you’re a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Utah, you may be ready to take the next step in your professional journey—serving as a clinical supervisor. Clinical supervisors play a vital role in shaping future therapists, but the process requires meeting specific state board qualifications. Below, you’ll find a clear breakdown of the Utah clinical supervisor requirements, CE renewal obligations, pitfalls, and resources to help you succeed.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

Under the Utah Administrative Code R156-60b-305a, a Marriage and Family Therapist Supervisor must:

  • Hold a valid Utah license in good standing as an MFT, Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CMHC), Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Psychologist, or Psychiatrist.

  • Have been licensed at that level for at least two consecutive years before supervising.

  • Be actively engaged in the lawful practice of marriage and family therapy.

  • Be employed by or under contract with the same facility that employs the supervisee.

  • Supervise no more than six supervisees at one time, unless granted a written exception.

For Associate MFTs (AMFTs), supervisors must also complete specific supervision training, either through:

  • A graduate-level supervision course in a COAMFTE-accredited program, or

  • At least 20 clock hours of approved instruction (AAMFT or UAMFT), which must include:

  • 4 hours: supervision models

  • 8 hours: processes and practice

  • 4 hours: research on supervision outcomes

  • 4 hours: ethics, state rules, and supervision case studies

🔁 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements

To maintain supervisor status, Utah requires:

  • 4 hours of CE directly related to MFT supervision during each two-year license renewal cycle.

This ensures supervisors remain current on best practices, ethics, and supervision methods.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

Even experienced clinicians can run into issues. The most frequent pitfalls include:

  • Supervisees not registered
Hours will not count if the supervisee is not a licensed AMFT in good standing.

  • Improper documentation
Missing supervision contracts, logs, or verification forms can lead to rejection of hours.

  • Supervisor not meeting requirements
If the supervisor had not yet completed the necessary training, was not licensed for the minimum two years, or exceeded supervisee limits, the supervised hours may be disqualified.

📘 How the Telehealth Certification Institute Helps You Meet Supervision CE Requirements

At the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI), we provide high-quality continuing education (CE) courses for behavioral health professionals.

⚠️ Important Note for Utah MFTs:

TCI offers continuing education (CE) only. Our courses do not fulfill Utah’s initial supervisor training requirement, which must be completed through a COAMFTE-accredited graduate supervision course or 20 clock hours of supervision training sponsored by AAMFT or UAMFT.

TCI’s CE programs are intended to support the ongoing renewal requirement of 4 supervision-related CE hours every two years.

Recommended Courses:

  • 10 CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle
