How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Wisconsin as a Licensed Psychologist

How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Wisconsin as a Licensed Psychologist

If you're a Licensed Psychologist (LP) in Wisconsin and wish to provide clinical supervision, it's essential to understand the state's rules and expectations. This guide outlines the Wisconsin clinical supervisor requirements, including eligibility, CE obligations, and pitfalls. We also highlight how TCI can support your Wisconsin LP supervision CE training goals.

📜 Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

Under Wis. Admin. Code § Psy 2.10(5), to provide clinical supervision for psychologists-in-training in Wisconsin, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Licensed Psychologist: You must be a licensed psychologist in good standing.

  • Competence in Psychological Practice: You must be adequately trained and skilled to competently oversee the services provided by your supervisee.

  • Post-Licensure Experience: You must have accrued professional experience after becoming licensed.

  • Supervision Training/Experience: You must have previous training or experience supervising psychological work.

  • No Immediate Family Relationship: You may not supervise a relative by blood or marriage.

Legal Citation: "The primary supervisor shall be a licensed psychologist and shall have adequate training, knowledge, and skill... The primary supervisor shall have post-licensure experience and shall have had training or experience in supervision of psychological work. Supervisors shall not be an immediate relative by blood or marriage." — Wis. Admin. Code § Psy 2.10(5)

🔄 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements

There are no supervision-specific CE requirements in Wisconsin. Licensed Psychologists who supervise must simply meet the same CE requirements that apply to all Wisconsin psychologists for license renewal. Key points about Wisconsin LP supervision CE and general continuing education are outlined in W.A.C.§ Psy 4.025 and Psy 4.035 and include:

  • 40 hours of CE every two years (biennium: 10/1 of an odd year to 9/30 of the next odd year).

  • 6 of the 40 hours must cover ethics, risk management, or jurisprudence.

  • Acceptable CE sources include APA, NASP, WPA, WSPA, and Category 1 AMA/AOA programs.

  • Graduate-level and board-approved CE from other states is acceptable.

  • No CE is required for the first biennium following initial licensure.

Note: CE hours completed in the topics of supervision or suicide prevention shall be calculated as 1.5 times the numbers of continuing education hours obtained (§ Psy 4.025(1)(b))

Additional credit options (up to 20 hours each):

  • Authorship of peer-reviewed publications

  • Teaching graduate-level psychology courses

  • Presenting professional workshops

  • Completing graduate-level psychology courses

LPs must maintain documentation of CE activities in case of a Board audit.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Supervisor Not Meeting Requirements: If the supervisor is unlicensed, lacks required experience, or is a relative, the supervision hours may be invalidated.

  • Improper Documentation: Missing supervision logs, evaluations, or verification forms can lead to hours being rejected.

  • Failure to Disclose Supervisee Status: Wisconsin requires trainees to clearly disclose their supervised status to clients. Misrepresentation may affect the legitimacy of supervised hours.

  • Scope of Practice Mismatch: Supervisors must only oversee services they are competent to perform themselves. Hours outside this scope may be disqualified.
