How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Wyoming as a Marriage and Family Therapist
Serving as a clinical supervisor in Wyoming is a key milestone for Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs). Supervisors shape future clinicians while upholding ethical, effective care. To qualify, MFTs must meet specific Wyoming clinical supervisor requirements for licensure, experience, and supervision training. This article explains the official rules, renewal CE obligations, and pitfalls—and shows how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can help you meet the Wyoming supervision training requirements for MFT’s with accredited CE courses.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
To serve as a Designated Qualified Clinical Supervisor (DQCS) in Wyoming as an MFT, you must meet the following state board requirements outlined in Chapter 18, Section 2 of the Wyoming Administrative Code:
You must have been licensed for independent practice for a minimum of two (2) years.
You must have at least four (4) years of post-graduate professional experience in your discipline prior to providing supervision.
You must be free from any disciplinary action (though exceptions may be granted by the Board if in the public interest).
You must have completed a graduate-level course in clinical supervision, OR have at least three (3) contact hours of continuing education (CE) in clinical supervision. Notably, if you're already serving as a supervisor, this educational requirement can be fulfilled during the current renewal period.
🔄 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements
While Wyoming does not require ongoing or renewal-specific continuing education (CE) solely for serving as a clinical supervisor, supervisors must maintain an active, unrestricted LMFT license in order to remain eligible to supervise.
To keep your Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) license active in Wyoming—and therefore continue serving as a Designated Qualified Clinical Supervisor (DQCS)—you must meet the state’s standard licensure renewal requirements, outlined in Wyoming Administrative Code Chapter 14, Sections 3-4:
Total CE Hours: 45 contact hours of continuing education are required every two (2) years
Ethics Requirement: At least 3 contact hours must be in professional ethics
Suicide Prevention Requirement: At least 3 contact hours must be in suicide assessment or intervention

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Supervisees not being registered or approved
Clinical practice under supervision is not permitted until documentation of a DQCS has been submitted to and approved by the Board.Supervision hours not counting due to improper documentation
The supervisor must submit the Verification and Evaluation of Supervised Experience (VESE) form within 30 days of the termination of supervision. Failure to do so may invalidate hours.Supervisor lacking eligibility at time of supervision
If you were not licensed for at least two years, lacked the 4 years of postgraduate experience, or hadn't completed the required supervision training at the time supervision occurred, those supervision hours may be disallowed by the Board.
🎓 How the Telehealth Certification Institute Supports Wyoming Supervisors
The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) provides continuing education (CE) courses designed to support professional development and structured to align with supervision training and licensure renewal frameworks.
Please note that TCI provides continuing education (CE) courses only, not university-level training.
⚠️ Important Note About Wyoming CE Approval
The Wyoming Board of Mental Health Practice does not pre-approve or pre-review continuing education providers. Licensees are responsible for ensuring that CE coursework meets the criteria outlined in Chapter 14 of the Wyoming Administrative Code and is relevant to their professional scope of practice.
Because CE eligibility is determined at the time of renewal, clinicians are encouraged to review Chapter 14 requirements and contact the Board directly if clarification is needed regarding specific coursework.
For additional clarification, clinicians may review the Board’s FAQ page:
