Bruce shares that he began providing online therapy due to a client moving and wanting to continue services. Bruce begins providing EMDR therapy to clients when they are in his office and then continues providing services via video sessions as needed. Bruce explains how this helps his clients overcome barriers to treatment and provides a brief demonstration.
Many ask, “Can EMDR be provided via a video session?” Bruce Woods Patterson, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, EMDRIA approved consultant and training facilitator, and EFT provider explains how he uses this powerful method of treatment in virtual therapy.

Are you providing any supervision for EMDRIA therapists that would like to explore this further.

This was great. I have been trained in EMDR and have been using it in my office. However at this point working with telehealth I was not sure how to go about it. This has given me more ideas.

I'm a patient who had started EMDR therapy sessions just prior to the county going on lockdown due to the Coronavirus, COVID-19. My first EMDR session utilized bitap paddles for the outside stimulation and I felt that it was extremely effective. My second EMDR session occurred via video conferencing and I had to tap on my legs with my fingers due to the bitap paddles being unavailable in that format. I found that trying to do EMDR through video conferencing was between 1/3 and 1/2 as effective as it was for me to do it in person with my therapist. Now I'm in a holding pattern; waiting for my county to lift its stay-at-home order so that I can meet with my clinician in person again. In the meantime, I've experienced a single occasion of suicidal thoughts and thoughts of self harm. I don't know if I just respond to therapy better when it occurs in person or if maybe something could be improved with the EMDR sessions my therapist is helping me with. Thanks for listening; just wanted to provide my two-cents.
