Arizona Licensed Professional Counselor Renewal Information

In Arizona, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) are required to renew their licenses every two years, as regulated by the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners.

The renewal process mandates that each LPC completes 30 clock hours of continuing education (CE) during the two-year period.

The CE requirements include specific areas of focus. LPCs must complete at least 3 CE hours in either behavioral health ethics or mental health law. Additionally, 3 CE hours must be dedicated to cultural competency and diversity.

CE Requirements to Be Approved as a Clinical Supervisor

To become an approved clinical supervisor in Arizona, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) must meet the continuing education (CE) requirements established by the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners (AZBBHE). For initial approval, LPCs must complete at least 12 hours of clinical supervision training that covers topics such as the roles and responsibilities of a supervisor, oversight of diagnosis and treatment planning, supervision techniques, and evaluation of supervisee competence. You can meet these requirements through courses like Methods of Supervision and Foundations of Supervision: Preparing for Effective Supervision.

In addition, LPCs are required to complete a 3-hour tutorial on Arizona statutes and regulations related to clinical supervision, which must be taken through an AZBBHE-approved provider, as this course is not currently offered by the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI).

To maintain supervisor status, LPCs must complete at least 9 hours of CE in clinical supervision every three years, including training on the same core topics as the initial requirement, as well as the recurring 3-hour Arizona-specific tutorial. For renewal, we recommend our 10 CE-Hour Clinical Supervision Bundle, which exceeds the required CE hours and provides comprehensive, skills-based training to support ethical and effective supervision.
