Hawaii CEU Requirements

For LMHC/MHC renewal in Hawaii, there is currently no continuing education (CE) requirement.

Hawaii Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) renew their license on a three-year (triennial) cycle, with each renewal period tied to the licensing triennium established by the State of Hawaii, and renewal required prior to the end of the applicable three-year licensing period. Under Hawaii Revised Statutes §451J-10, beginning with the triennium that commenced January 1, 2017, and for every triennial renewal thereafter, each MFT must complete a minimum of forty-five (45) continuing education (CE) credit hours during the three-year period preceding the renewal date, including at least six (6) credit hours specifically in ethics. A first-time licensee is exempt from the continuing education requirement for their first license renewal only, but all subsequent renewals must meet the full 45-hour requirement, including the six-hour ethics component.

While Hawaii does not require supervision-specific CE to serve as a clinical supervisor, all licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) must meet the state’s general CE requirements to renew their license—and remain eligible to supervise.

According to Hawaii Revised Statutes §451J-10(b)(2), each licensee must:

  • At least 6 hours in ethics

Although supervision-focused CE is not mandated, it is strongly recommended for MFTs who oversee interns or pre-licensed candidates. Hawaii Licensed Social Workers, including Licensed Bachelor Social Workers (LBSW), Licensed Social Workers (LSW), and Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW), renew their licenses on a biennial (two-year) cycle through the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA), Professional and Vocational Licensing Division, and must complete continuing education prior to each renewal. All LBSW and LSW licensees in active status, as well as all LCSW licensees, are required to complete a minimum of forty-five (45) continuing education (CE) credit hours during each two-year renewal period, and at least three (3) of those hours must be in ethics courses.

Hawaii does not require any supervision-specific continuing education (CE) to become or remain a clinical supervisor. However, to keep your license active and remain eligible to supervise, Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) must meet the state’s general CE requirements, which include completing 45 CE hours every two years. Of these hours, 3 must be in ethics (H.R.S. §467E-11(c)(2)).

Although supervision-focused CE is not mandated, the Hawaii Board of Social Work strongly encourages ongoing training in supervision best practices. Hawaii licensed psychologists (LPs) renew their licenses on a biennial (two-year) renewal cycle, with renewal due on or before June 30 of each even-numbered year. Psychologists must complete a minimum of 18 continuing education (CE) credit hours during every licensing biennium prior to renewal, and Hawaii law does not specify any required topic areas (such as ethics, supervision, or telehealth) within those 18 hours. First-time licensees are exempt from the 18-hour CE requirement for their first license renewal only, but must meet the full 18 CE hours for each renewal cycle thereafter.

Hawaii does not require supervision-specific continuing education (CE) to qualify or remain eligible to serve as an internship or postdoctoral supervisor. However, all licensed psychologists must meet the state’s general CE requirements to maintain an active license and remain eligible to supervise. Under HRS §465-11 – Renewals; Continuing Education Requirement, psychologists are required to complete 18 hours of continuing education within each biennial licensing cycle, which runs from July 1 of an even-numbered year through June 30 of the next even-numbered year.

CE activities must be relevant to the psychologist’s professional practice and approved by the American Psychological Association (APA), the Hawaii Psychological Association (HPA), or another qualifying state or provincial psychological association. First-time licensees—and, beginning July 1, 2026, associate psychologists—are exempt from this CE requirement for their first renewal. Psychologists granted a CE extension must complete 36 CE hours in the following biennium.
