Kentucky CEU Requirements

Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) in Kentucky must renew their license every year, and each annual renewal cycle requires the completion of 10 continuing education (CE) hours during the renewal period. In addition to the annual CE requirement, Kentucky LPCs must complete specific mandatory continuing education topics based on their licensure timeline. 3 CE hours in domestic violence must be completed within three years of initial licensure, and 6 CE hours in suicide assessment, treatment, and management are required within the first three years of licensure, with the suicide-related training repeated every six years thereafter. Kentucky LPCs must also complete 3 CE hours focused on Kentucky counseling law and regulations every three years. Counselors who teach a board-approved course in any of these required subject areas are considered to have satisfied the corresponding CE requirement.

Telehealth Certification Institute, LLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6693. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Telehealth Certification Institute, LLC is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

NBCC CE hours are accepted by the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Professional Counselors accepts.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) in Kentucky are required to renew their license every year, and each one-year renewal cycle requires the completion of 15 approved continuing education (CE) hours for licensees. As part of the annual CE requirement, MFTs must complete 3 CE hours in professional marriage and family therapy ethics during each renewal period. In addition to the annual requirement, licensees must complete 6 CE hours in suicide assessment, treatment, and management every six years, with these hours required in accordance with regulation and counted separately unless otherwise preapproved. Kentucky MFTs are also required to complete 3 CE hours of training in domestic violence and elder abuse within three years of initial licensure, covering topics such as abuse dynamics, victim impact, legal protections, risk assessment, reporting requirements, and available community resources.

To serve as a clinical supervisor in Kentucky, Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs who are not AAMFT-approved supervisors or AAMFT supervisor candidates) must first meet the initial continuing education (CE) requirements outlined in Section 2(4) of 201 KAR 32:035, which include completing six (6) hours of supervision training within two years prior to applying for board-approved supervisor status. This training must cover key areas such as:

• Kentucky law surrounding marriage and family therapy (KRS 335.300–335.399 and 201 KAR Ch. 32)
• Supervision theories
• Ethical issues in supervision
• Supervisor responsibilities, such as logs, treatment planning, and recording

Once approved as a clinical supervisor, Kentucky requires ongoing CE each year to maintain board-approved supervisor status:

• Non-AAMFT-approved supervisors: Must complete at least two (2) hours per year in supervision, covering Kentucky law, supervision theories, ethics, and supervisor responsibilities.
• AAMFT-approved supervisors or supervisor candidates: Must complete at least one (1) hour per year focused solely on Kentucky laws regarding MFT.

The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers CE courses to help you meet Kentucky’s supervision CE requirements—excluding the Kentucky law component (KRS 335.300–335.399 and 201 KAR Ch. 32), which TCI does not provide.

To fulfill some of the annual renewal requirement (excluding Kentucky law), you can complete a combination of the following courses:

Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) and Licensed Social Workers (LSWs) in Kentucky renew their licenses on a three-year renewal cycle, and during each three-year period, licensees must complete a minimum of 30 continuing education (CE) hours. As part of the required CE hours for each renewal period, licensees must complete 3 CE hours in the Kentucky Code of Ethical Conduct, which must be taken in person or through technology-mediated learning. During the three-year renewal period following initial licensure, licensees are required to complete 3 CE hours in domestic violence and elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Additionally, every six years, licensees must complete 6 CE hours in suicide assessment, treatment, and management as part of the required continuing education hours. Licensees are also required to complete 1.5 CE hours in pediatric abusive head trauma at least once every six years, covering the recognition and prevention of abusive head trauma. All continuing education hours outlined in the regulation are completed as part of the required CE hours for the applicable renewal period.

To become an approved clinical supervisor in Kentucky, the Kentucky Board of Social Work requires LCSWs to complete a one-time, 6-hour board-approved supervision training course before beginning any supervision. This training must be delivered by an approved provider—courses from the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) do NOT qualify because they have not been pre-approved. Pre-approved Supervision courses can be found on the Kentucky Board of Social Work website.

In addition to the initial requirement, supervisors must also complete 3 hours of clinical supervision-specific CE during each license renewal period to maintain supervisory status.

Telehealth Certification Institute LLC, #1609, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 05/02/2024 – 05/02/2027.

ASWB CE hours are accepted by the Kentucky Board of Social Work.

Licensed Psychologists (LPs) in Kentucky renew their license on a three-year renewal cycle, and during each three-year renewal period, credential holders must document the completion of 39 continuing education (CE) hours. As part of the required CE hours, LPs must complete 6 CE hours in suicide assessment, treatment, and management within the first year of licensure and every six years thereafter. In addition, each three-year renewal period must include a minimum of 3 CE hours in either ethical practice or risk management. All required continuing education hours are counted within the applicable three-year renewal period as outlined in the regulation.

Kentucky does require supervision-specific continuing education (CE) for psychologists to qualify for and maintain approval as clinical supervisors. Under 201 KAR 26:171, Section 4, psychologists approved as clinical supervisors must complete at least 3 hours of Board-approved, supervision-specific continuing education during each three-year renewal cycle. In addition to this ongoing CE requirement, newly approved supervisors must also complete a one-time, Board-approved supervisory training within 12 months of initial supervisor approval. These supervision-specific requirements are separate from, and in addition to, the general continuing education requirements for psychologist license renewal in Kentucky.
