Louisiana CEU Requirements

Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) in Kansas are required to renew their licenses every two years, with the deadline set for June 30th in either odd- or even-numbered years, matching the year of initial licensure. To remain in good standing, counselors must complete a minimum of 40 continuing education (CE) hours per renewal cycle. This includes at least 3 hours in ethics and 6 hours specifically focused on diagnosis, assessment, and treatment under the DSM-5, both of which are mandatory topics. While CE hours can be earned through various learning formats, no more than 20 hours may be completed online.

To maintain your status as a Board-Approved LPC Supervisor (LPC-S) in Louisiana, you must complete 3 clock hours of clinical supervision continuing education every two years as part of your license renewal. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) in Kansas must renew their licenses every two years, with the renewal deadline falling on December 31st of the same year type in which the license was originally approved—odd-year licensees renew in odd years, even-year licensees in even years. Each renewal cycle requires a minimum of 40 continuing education (CE) hours, with specific content requirements. At least 20 hours must focus on Marriage and Family Therapy, and 3 hours must be in ethics specific to the field of MFT. Additionally, 6 CE hours are required in diagnosis, assessment, and treatment under the DSM-5. While CE can be completed in a variety of formats, no more than 20 hours may be earned through online coursework, ensuring a balance between interactive and self-paced learning.

To serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Louisiana (per LAC Title 46, Part LX, § 3317.A), you must complete one of the following supervision training paths:

• A graduate-level course in MFT supervision, or
• A board-approved equivalent, consisting of:
  • 15 hours of didactic training (theoretical knowledge), and
  • 15 hours of interactive, live training with a minimum of four participants

To maintain supervisor status (per § 3317.E), you must renew every four years, and:

• Complete 6 hours of CE in clinical supervision topics (e.g., ethics, supervision models, legal issues)
• Attend the board-approved orientation/renewal workshop (this counts toward the 6-hour requirement)

This specific board-approved orientation is not offered by TCI and must be completed through the Louisiana licensing board or another board-approved provider.

Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) in Louisiana are required to renew their licenses annually, with each renewal period requiring a minimum of 20 continuing education (CE) hours approved by the board. Of these 20 hours, at least 10 hours must focus on clinical content, specifically addressing the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. Additionally, 3 hours of ethics training are required every two years, which may be applied to the CE total in the applicable renewal cycle.

Before applying for BACS status and beginning to supervise, LCSWs in Louisiana must complete:

• A board-approved supervision workshop covering supervision models, theory and techniques, documentation, and ethics and multicultural issues (must be at least 6.5 clock hours)
• A board orientation workshop provided by the Louisiana State Board of Social Work Examiners

There is no university coursework requirement, but you must complete CE training that is explicitly approved by the board.

To maintain your Board-Approved Clinical Supervisor (BACS) designation in Louisiana, the Louisiana State Board of Social Work Examiners requires 3 hours of board-approved continuing education in clinical supervision every two years.

Licensed Psychologists (LPs) in Louisiana are required to renew their licenses every two years, with the biennial reporting period running from July 1 to June 30. Each renewal cycle mandates a minimum of 40 hours of continuing professional development (CPD). Within these 40 hours, at least 2 hours must focus on ethics or law, and 2 hours must address multiculturalism or diversity, as specified by board guidelines.

Louisiana does not require supervision-specific continuing education (CE) for psychologists to qualify for or maintain eligibility as clinical supervisors. Instead, Licensed Psychologists (LPs) who supervise must comply with the state’s general Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements for license renewal. Under Louisiana Administrative Code, Title 46, Part LXIII, §§ 803–805, psychologists are required to complete 40 hours of CPD every two years, including at least 2 hours in ethics or law and at least 2 hours in multiculturalism or diversity. All CE must be obtained from board-approved providers, such as APA-approved sponsors. Maintaining compliance with these general CPD requirements is essential to remain in good standing with the Louisiana State Board of Examiners of Psychologists and eligible to supervise licensure candidates.
