Maryland CEU Requirements

Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) in Maryland must renew their licenses every two years, with the expiration date listed on their individual license certificates. To maintain active licensure, both LPCs and MFTs are required to complete a minimum of 40 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) within each renewal cycle. At least 30 of these CEUs must be earned through Category A activities, which include live, real-time formats such as in-person seminars and interactive webinars. No more than 10 CEUs may be completed through Category B activities, which cover asynchronous or self-paced online study.

Although Maryland does not require any continuing education (CE) specifically for clinical supervisors, you must maintain your LCMFT license in good standing to remain eligible to supervise. This includes fulfilling the state’s general CE requirements (outlined in COMAR 10.58.05.03) every two years.

To renew your LCMFT license, the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors & Therapists requires:

• 40 total CE hours per renewal cycle (every 2 years)
• At least 30 hours must be Category A — formal, structured learning from Board-approved CE providers
• No more than 10 hours may be Category B — self-directed learning such as recorded webinars, readings, or informal training

These CE requirements apply to all LCMFTs, whether or not they serve as clinical supervisors. While supervision-specific CE is not mandated by the Board, it is strongly recommended to maintain competency and ethical standards in your supervisory role.

Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) in Maryland are required to renew their licenses every two years. To be eligible for renewal, LCSWs must complete a total of 40 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) within each two-year cycle. At least 20 CEUs must be obtained from approved Category I programs, which include structured, formal learning such as live courses, workshops, and webinars. A minimum of 3 CEUs must focus on ethics and professional conduct, covering topics such as boundary issues, standards of practice, or legal requirements specific to Maryland social work. Additionally, 3 Category I CEUs must be dedicated to anti-oppressive social work practices, with content addressing race, culture, equity, cultural humility, social justice, racial equity, implicit bias, or anti-racism.

To become a Board-Approved Clinical Supervisor in Maryland, you must first meet specific eligibility requirements set by the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners. One way you can meet this requirement is by completing required training in clinical supervision, which can be fulfilled through a graduate-level course, 12 hours of agency-sponsored training, or 12 continuing education (CE) hours from a Board-authorized provider.

Once approved, to maintain your status as a Board-Approved Supervisor, Maryland requires 3 CE units in clinical supervision every 2-year license renewal cycle, as outlined in COMAR 10.42.08.07C(8). These CE units must be completed through a Board-authorized provider, which includes the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI). The CE units can be either Category I or Category II credits.

Licensed Psychologists in Maryland must renew their licenses every two years. Each licensee is required to complete a minimum of 40 Continuing Education (CE) hours during each reporting period to maintain active licensure. Of these, no more than 20 hours may be earned through independent study, allowing for flexible, self-paced learning options. A minimum of 3 CE hours must focus on laws, ethics, or risk management, addressing critical topics such as legal standards, ethical conduct, and risk mitigation strategies in psychological practice. In addition, psychologists must complete at least 3 CE hours dedicated to enhancing cultural competence, specifically through training aimed at improving the provision of psychological services to culturally diverse populations.

Maryland does not require a separate license, designation, or approval to serve as a clinical supervisor; however, licensed psychologists who supervise must comply with the state’s general continuing education (CE) requirements for license renewal. Under COMAR 10.36.02.04, Maryland licensed psychologists are required to complete 40 CE hours every two years. Within those 40 hours, at least 3 hours must be in ethics, laws, or risk management, and at least 3 hours must be in cultural competence. In addition, if a psychologist supervises psychology associates (unlicensed individuals) during the reporting period, a minimum of 3 CE hours must be in activities designed to enhance competence in the provision of clinical supervision. Maryland also limits independent study to a maximum of 20 CE hours per renewal cycle. Maintaining compliance with these CE requirements is essential to remain eligible to supervise and to ensure that supervised experience hours are accepted by the Board.

To support Maryland psychologists in meeting these requirements while strengthening supervisory skills, the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers APA-approved continuing education programs. These include the Clinical Supervision Certificate Program (CSC, 49 CE hours) and the 20 CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle, both of which may be applied toward up to the maximum 20 of the 40 CE hours permitted through independent study.
