New Jersey CEU Requirements

Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) in New Jersey must complete 40 continuing education (CE) hours every two years to maintain active licensure. This biennial renewal cycle ensures that all LPCs stay professionally current. Within the 40-hour requirement, at least 5 CE hours must be in ethics, and a minimum of 3 CE hours must focus on social and cultural competency. These specific topics are mandatory and reflect the state's emphasis on ethical practice and cultural awareness in counseling.

These CE hours must include:

Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) in New Jersey must complete a minimum of 40 continuing education (CE) credits every two years to maintain their license. This biennial renewal cycle ensures that social workers remain current in best practices and clinical knowledge. Of the 40 required credits, at least 20 must be directly related to clinical practice. Additionally, 5 credits must be in ethics, 3 credits must be in social and cultural competency, and 1 credit must focus on prescription opioid addiction. LCSWs who exceed the 40-credit minimum may carry over up to 8 surplus credits into the next renewal period, providing flexibility for future compliance.

Before beginning clinical supervision, LCSWs in New Jersey must complete a minimum of 20 continuing education (CE) credits in postgraduate coursework specifically related to clinical supervision, as outlined in N.J.A.C. 13:44G-8.1(b)(3)(ii) . This coursework must be completed prior to providing supervision and must be approved by the New Jersey Board of Social Work Examiners.

⚠️ Important New Jersey–Specific Requirement for Supervision Education
New Jersey imposes strict requirements on the supervision education used to qualify as a clinical supervisor.

Under N.J.A.C. 13:44G-8.1(c)(2) , all supervision coursework must be taught in person by an LCSW who independently meets New Jersey’s supervisor eligibility requirements. As such, TCI courses will not be eligible to fulfill CE requirements in New Jersey, but can help enhance your skills and knowledge.

While there are no specific CE renewal requirements for clinical supervisors to maintain supervisor status after meeting the initial qualifications, you must fulfill general continuing education requirements to keep your LCSW license active and remain eligible to supervise.

To renew your LCSW license in New Jersey, N.J.A.C. 13:44G-6.2(a)(1) requires completion of 40 CE credits every two years, including at least:

• 20 CE credits in clinical practice
• 5 CE credits in ethics
• 3 CE credits in social and cultural competence

CE Carryover Rule
If an LCSW earns more than 40 CE credits during a biennial renewal period, up to 8 surplus credits may be carried forward into the succeeding biennial period, as permitted under N.J.A.C. 13:44G-6.2(a)(1) .

Telehealth Certification Institute LLC, #1609, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 05/02/2024 – 05/02/2027.

The NJ Board of Social Work Examiners accepts attendance at programs or courses offered by providers approved by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB): one credit for each hour of attendance.

Licensed psychologists in New Jersey are required to complete 40 continuing education (CE) credits every two years to renew their license, ensuring ongoing professional development and competence in the field of psychology. As part of this biennial renewal cycle, specific topic areas are mandated: at least 4 CE credits must be dedicated to domestic violence education, which includes subjects such as intimate partner violence, elder abuse, and child abuse. Additionally, 1 CE credit must cover opioid education, focusing on the risks, signs, and prevention of opioid abuse, addiction, and diversion.

New Jersey does not require supervision-specific continuing education (CE) for psychologists who serve as clinical supervisors. Supervisors must meet the same CE requirements that apply to all licensed psychologists to maintain active licensure. N.J.A.C. § 13:42-10.20 states that psychologists must complete 40 CE credits every two years, including 4 credits in domestic violence topics, 1 credit related to prescription opioid drugs, and 1 credit through completion of the New Jersey State Board of Psychological Examiners’ Jurisprudence Online Review. At least 20 of the 40 credits must be psychology-related and presented by or approved by recognized organizations such as the American Psychological Association (APA), the National Register of Health Service Psychologists, or the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB), and at least 10 of those 20 credits must include live interaction with the instructor (N.J.A.C. § 13:42-10.21).
