South Dakota CE Details

South Dakota LPC and MFT Renewal Information

In South Dakota, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are required to complete 40 continuing education (CE) hours every two years to maintain active licensure, as regulated by the South Dakota Department of Social Services. Each renewal cycle ensures that professionals stay up to date with evolving standards in the field. At least 4 of the 40 CE hours must be dedicated to ethics, specifically focusing on ethical standards and practices in counseling.

CE Requirements to Be Approved as a Clinical Supervisor(LPC-S)

To maintain Board-Approved Clinical Supervisor status in South Dakota, supervisors must complete 4 hours of qualified continuing education (CE) focused on clinical supervision during each renewal cycle. Renewal is required by November 30 of even-numbered years. The Telehealth Certification Institute offers a variety of individual supervision CE courses that meet this requirement, including training on topics such as ethics in supervision, multicultural considerations, and supervision in telehealth settings. These flexible, high-quality courses are ideal for fulfilling South Dakota’s CE requirement while enhancing your skills as an approved clinical supervisor.

CE Requirements to Be Approved as a Clinical Supervisor(MFT-S)

To become a Supervisor in South Dakota, applicants who are not AAMFT-Approved Supervisors must meet supervision-specific continuing education (CE) requirements outlined in ARSD 20:71:05:01.

Under this rule:

  • Supervisors with at least two years of active licensure must complete 4 hours of supervision-focused CE within the past two years.
  • Supervisors with only one year of licensure must complete 15 hours of supervision-specific CE.

AAMFT-Approved Supervisors are exempt from these CE requirements under ARSD 20:71:05:01.

Once approved, supervisors who are not AAMFT-Approved must complete at least 4 hours of supervision-specific CE during each two-year renewal cycle to maintain their supervisor status (ARSD 20:71:05:07).

The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers flexible, fully online CE programs that fulfill both initial and renewal requirements. If you are applying with only one year of licensure, the 15 CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle is designed to meet the full 15-hour initial requirement. If you already have two years of licensure or are renewing your supervisor status, you can choose from our Individual Clinical Supervision CE Courses to complete the required 4 hours. For a more comprehensive option, the Clinical Supervision Certificate Program (49 CE hours) exceeds both the 15-hour initial and 4-hour renewal requirements, while equipping you with advanced supervision skills.
