Tennessee CEU Requirements

In Tennessee, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are required to renew their licenses every two years, with all licenses expiring on December 31 of odd-numbered years. To maintain licensure, professionals must complete a minimum of 20 hours of Continuing Education (CE) per renewal cycle. Of those, 3 hours must be dedicated to professional ethics and 2 hours must cover Tennessee laws and rules—these 5 hours are mandatory for all licensees. Additionally, any LPCs or MFTs providing supervision must complete 3 hours of CE specifically in supervision training.

To maintain your status as an approved clinical supervisor in Tennessee, you must complete three (3) clock hours of continuing education (CE) related to counseling supervision or supervision topics every two years. This requirement, outlined in Rule 0450-01-.10(e), helps ensure that supervisors remain up to date with current best practices, ethical standards, and supervisory techniques. These flexible, self-paced CE options allow LPC-MHSPs to choose supervision topics that align with their interests and fulfill Tennessee’s renewal requirement with ease.

While there are no separate continuing education (CE) requirements specifically for supervisors in Tennessee, all licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) must complete 10 clock hours of CE every calendar year to keep their license active and remain eligible to supervise (Rule 0450-02-.12).

Although supervision-focused CE is not mandatory, supervisors are expected to maintain competence in supervision as part of their ethical responsibilities. Additionally, 3 of your CE hours every two years must focus on ethics, Tennessee MFT law, or Board regulations.

If you hold multiple licenses (e.g., LMFT and LPC), you must complete 30 CE hours every two years, with at least 10 hours directly related to the practice of each license. Those holding three licenses must complete 40 CE hours every two years.

Multi-Media (Online) CE Limitations

Rule 0450-02-.12(3)(b) permits online and distance learning CE, but limits how many hours may be earned through multi-media formats each calendar year:

• Single license holders: Maximum of 5 clock hours per year
• Two licenses: Maximum of 7.5 clock hours per year
• Three licenses: Maximum of 10 clock hours per year

Online courses, internet-based CE, videoconferencing, teleconferencing, and distance learning formats fall under this multi-media category.

In Tennessee, Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) must renew their licenses on a two-year renewal cycle, completing all requirements within each two-calendar-year period as set by the Tennessee Board of Social Worker Licensure. For every renewal cycle, LCSWs are required to complete 30 clock hours of Continuing Education (CE), making Tennessee’s CE standards among the more rigorous in the region. Ethics training is a major focus, with 6 of the 30 required hours mandated specifically in social work ethics. In addition, 1 CE hour must cover Tennessee-specific laws and rules, including Tennessee Code Annotated §§ 63-23-101 et seq. and the Rules and Regulations of the Tennessee Board of Social Worker Licensure, ensuring licensees remain compliant with state legal standards. Tennessee also imposes a critical public safety requirement: all LCSWs must complete a Board-approved 2-hour suicide prevention training at least once every four years, regardless of renewal cycle timing.

To qualify as a clinical supervisor in Tennessee, LCSWs must complete 12 cumulative hours of continuing education (CE) specifically focused on clinical or non-clinical advanced practice social work supervision.

At least 3 of these hours must address Tennessee licensure law, such as through the NASW-TN course Ethical Understanding of TN Social Work Licensure Law. This 12-hour CE requirement is one-time only (not annual) and applies to first-time supervisors beginning on or after January 1, 2023. These hours may be completed before or during the first year of supervision and can also count toward the licensee’s regular CE requirement.

While Tennessee does not require ongoing supervision-specific CE to maintain supervisor status, many LCSWs pursue additional training to stay current with ethical standards, supervision methods, and best practices.

Note on CE Acceptance:
The Tennessee Board of Social Worker Licensure does not pre-approve CE providers or courses. Per Rule 1365-01-.09, “It is the licensee’s responsibility, using professional judgment and the guidelines provided within these rules, to determine whether or not the programs are applicable and appropriate to the licensee’s professional development.”

However, because TCI is an accredited national CE provider, our supervision courses and certificate programs are designed to meet Tennessee’s standards for acceptable CE when selected by the licensee to strengthen supervision competence.

In Tennessee, Licensed Psychologists are required to renew their licenses every two years and must complete 40 hours of Continuing Education (CE) during each renewal cycle, as mandated by the Tennessee Board of Examiners in Psychology. To ensure meaningful engagement, at least 20 of these hours must involve real-time interaction, such as live webinars, workshops, or seminars. Additionally, a minimum of 9 CE hours must be provided by an APA-approved sponsor, emphasizing the importance of accredited, high-quality educational content. The state also mandates focused training on critical professional issues. Specifically, 3 CE hours must address cultural diversity, with content clearly tied to aspects such as age, race, gender, disability, socioeconomic status, or sexual orientation. Another 3 CE hours must cover Tennessee laws (T.C.A. Title 63, Chapter 11), Board rules (Chapters 1180-01 through 1180-04), and professional ethics, ensuring psychologists remain compliant with state regulations and uphold the highest ethical standards.

Tennessee does not impose separate, supervision-specific continuing education (CE) requirements for psychologists who serve as clinical supervisors. Instead, psychologists who supervise must meet the general CE requirements for license renewal established by the Tennessee Department of Health, Board of Examiners in Psychology under Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 1180-01-.08. Licensed Psychologists, Senior Psychological Examiners, and Psychological Examiners are required to complete 40 hours of approved CE every two (2) years, earned during the two calendar years (January 1–December 31) preceding the renewal year; licensees whose initial licensure term is less than two years must complete 30 hours for their first renewal cycle. Of the required 40 hours, at least 20 hours must involve real-time interaction (such as live webinars or in-person programs), a minimum of 9 hours must be provided by an APA-approved sponsor, 3 hours must address cultural diversity, and 3 hours must cover a combination of Tennessee laws (T.C.A. Title 63, Chapter 11), Tennessee Board rules (Chapters 1180-01 through 1180-04 and 1180-06), and professional ethics. Independent, unstructured learning or home study does not count toward CE requirements unless it qualifies as approved continuing education from an APA-approved or otherwise Board-approved sponsor.

The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers APA-approved continuing education applicable to Tennessee license renewal, including the 20 CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle, which includes 1.5 CE hours in cultural diversity, and Individual Clinical Supervision CE Courses that support skill development in areas such as ethics, documentation, supervision models, cultural responsiveness, and telesupervision. TCI’s Live Webinars are the only offerings that provide real-time, interactive CE and may be used to help satisfy Tennessee’s requirement for at least 20 hours of live/interactive continuing education.
