Texas CEU Requirements

In Texas, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) must renew their license every two years, with the renewal deadline falling on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. During each renewal cycle, LPCs are required to complete a minimum of 24 continuing education (CE) hours to maintain active licensure. Of these hours, at least 6 must be in ethics, including professional responsibility and applicable rules, and 3 hours must focus on cultural diversity and competency; both may be counted toward the total 24-hour requirement. LPCs must also pass the Texas jurisprudence examination during each renewal cycle, which counts as 1 hour of ethics CE.

To maintain your LPC-Supervisor designation in Texas, the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC) requires you to complete 6 clock-hours of continuing education (CE) specifically related to supervision during each renewal cycle. These 6 hours count toward your overall 24-hour CE requirement for LPC license renewal. (See Rule §681.140(b))

In Texas, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) are required to renew their license every two years, with the renewal deadline on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. Each renewal period requires completion of 30 continuing education (CE) hours. Of these, 6 hours must be in ethics, and an additional 3 hours must address competency in providing services to a distinct population, defined as a group sharing a common attribute or characteristic. LMFTs who provide telehealth services are also required to complete 2 hours in technology-assisted services, which count toward the total CE requirement.

To become a supervisor in Texas, LMFTs must meet specific training requirements outlined in 22 TAC §801.143. If you pursue the 40-hour continuing education pathway, the training must:

• Be taught by a graduate-level licensee holding supervisor status issued by the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council;
• Be completed within 90 days; and
• Include the required topic-hour allocations specified in §801.143(m).

Applicants should verify that any 40-hour training provider meets these Texas-specific instructor and content requirements before enrolling

Once approved, supervisors must also meet ongoing CE requirements every two years as part of their 30-hour license renewal under 22 TAC §801.261:

• 6 hours of supervision-specific CE
• Texas jurisprudence exam (counts as 1 hour of ethics CE)

Licensees who provide telehealth services must complete 2 hours in technology-assisted services

The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) provides continuing education (CE) courses designed to support professional development for Texas LMFTs.

Texas does not pre-approve CE providers. Licensees are responsible for ensuring that their selected CE activities comply with 22 TAC §801.261, including content requirements and the 50% qualifying-provider rule.

In Texas, Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs), along with LBSWs and LMSWs, must renew their license every two years by the last day of their birth month. Each renewal cycle requires completion of 30 continuing education (CE) hours. Within these hours, social workers must complete at least 6 hours in ethics and an additional 3 hours focused on serving a distinct population, which may relate to cultural competency, diversity, or another defined client group. Beginning January 1, 2024, at least half of the CE hours must be obtained from a provider listed in Texas Administrative Code 781.501.

To become a Council-approved supervisor in Texas, you must first complete a 40-hour supervisor training program within 90 consecutive days, as required by 22 TAC §781.404. The training must be taught by a licensed social worker who holds Council-approved supervisor status and must cover core topics such as supervision models, ethics, legal issues, and administrative responsibilities.

To maintain approval as a Council-approved supervisor in Texas, you must complete six (6) hours of continuing education (CE) in supervision every two years as part of your biennial license renewal. These hours count toward the total 30 CE hours required for renewal, but they must be directly relevant to supervision practice and obtained from Board-recognized providers.

In Texas, Licensed Psychologists, including psychological associates and school psychologists, must renew their license every two years, with the renewal deadline on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. To maintain licensure, psychologists must complete a minimum of 40 hours of professional development (CE) during each renewal cycle. This must include at least 6 hours in ethics, rules, or professional responsibility, and an additional 6 hours in cultural diversity; both may be applied toward the 40-hour requirement. Additionally, at least half of the CE hours must be completed through providers listed in Texas Administrative Code 463.35(e).

Texas does not impose any supervision-specific continuing education (CE) requirements for psychologists who serve as clinical supervisors. Licensed Psychologists who supervise trainees or Provisionally Licensed Psychologists must instead meet the general continuing education requirements for license renewal established by the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council under 22 Texas Administrative Code (TAC) §463.35. Texas psychologists are required to complete 40 hours of professional development (continuing education) during each biennial renewal period. Of the 40 required hours, at least 6 hours must be in ethics and 6 hours must be designed to ensure competency when providing services to a distinct population of the licensee’s choice (commonly referred to as cultural diversity). These required hours are part of the 40-hour total. At least half (20 hours) must be obtained from approved providers (such as professional associations, universities, or other Board-recognized entities), while the remaining hours may be earned through other allowable professional development activities outlined in the rule. Texas also permits psychologists to carry forward up to 10 excess CE hours into the next renewal cycle.

The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers APA-approved continuing education applicable to Texas license renewal that allows psychologists to meet these general CE requirements while strengthening their skills as supervisors. TCI’s offerings include the Clinical Supervision Certificate (CSC) Program, which provides 49 CE hours of in-depth training in supervision models, ethics, evaluation, multicultural supervision (includes 1.5 CE hours related to cultural diversity), documentation, and telesupervision, as well as Individual Clinical Supervision CE Courses for psychologists who prefer to focus on specific topics. While Texas does not require supervisor-specific CE, completing structured supervision training can help psychologists maintain compliance with renewal requirements while enhancing supervisory competence and effectiveness.
