Utah CEU Requirements

In Utah, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) are required to renew their license every two years, with all licenses expiring on September 30 of even-numbered years. As part of the renewal process, LPCs must complete a total of 40 hours of continuing education (CE) that is directly related to their professional counseling practice. Of these 40 hours, at least 6 hours must focus on ethics and legal standards, while an additional 2 hours must cover suicide prevention training. First-time licensees may qualify for a prorated CE requirement based on the number of months they have been licensed during the renewal cycle. Utah LPCs are permitted to complete up to 10 hours of CE through online, self-paced courses, while the remaining 30 hours must be earned through live, in-person events or interactive webinars.

Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) in Utah must renew their professional license every two years, with all licenses expiring on September 30 of even-numbered years. To maintain licensure, MFTs are required to complete 40 hours of continuing education (CE) during each renewal cycle. The CE must include 6 hours focused on ethics and legal standards, with at least 3 of those hours specifically addressing marriage and family therapy ethics and law. Additionally, 2 hours must be dedicated to suicide prevention training, and 15 hours must directly relate to the practice of marriage and family therapy. Of the total CE hours, up to 15 hours may be completed through self-paced, online learning, while the remaining 25 hours must be earned through live, in-person instruction or interactive webinars.

To serve as a clinical supervisor for Associate MFTs (AMFTs) in Utah, you must first complete initial supervision training, as outlined in Utah Administrative Code R156-60b-305a.

Before providing supervision to AMFTs, you must complete one of the following:

• A graduate-level supervision course in a COAMFTE-accredited MFT program, or
• 20 clock hours of approved instruction from AAMFT or UAMFT, including:
  • 4 hours on supervision models
  • 8 hours on supervision processes and practice
  • 4 hours on research on supervision outcomes
  • 4 hours on ethics, state laws, and supervision case studies

Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) in Utah are required to renew their licenses every two years, with the license expiration date falling on September 30 of even-numbered years, as mandated by the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL). Each renewal cycle requires LCSWs to complete 40 hours of continuing education (CE) relevant to their professional practice. This must include at least 6 hours in professional ethics, law, or technology, along with 2 hours specifically focused on suicide prevention. LCSWs may complete up to 15 hours of CE through self-paced, online coursework, while the remaining 25 hours must be earned through live, in-person events or interactive webinars. First-time licensees who have not held their license for the full two-year cycle are subject to prorated CE requirements, calculated at 1.6 hours per month licensed.

To retain your eligibility as a supervisor in Utah, you must meet two CE obligations during every two-year renewal cycle. First, you must maintain your LCSW license by completing 40 total CE hours, including 6 hours in ethics, law, or technology, 2 hours in suicide prevention, and no more than 15 hours through online self-study (Utah Admin Code R156-60a-304). Second, you must maintain your supervisor status by completing a 4-hour supervisor recertification course through NASW-Utah during each renewal cycle (R156-60a-305a).

Licensed Psychologists in Utah must renew their licenses every two years, with each renewal cycle beginning on October 1 of even-numbered years. During each cycle, psychologists—including certified prescribing and provisional prescribing psychologists—are required to complete 48 hours of continuing education (CE) that is directly relevant to their professional practice. Of these, a minimum of 6 hours must be focused on ethics and law. Acceptable CE formats include unlimited hours from in-person or live formats such as classroom courses, seminars, and professional conferences, provided each session is at least one hour long. Additionally, psychologists may earn up to 18 hours through internet or distance learning courses, so long as the courses include an exam, a certificate of completion, and are recognized by the American Psychological Association (APA) or a state/province psychological association. Up to 6 hours may also be earned through documented clinical readings or peer consultations. New licensees are subject to prorated CE requirements based on the date of licensure, and all licensees must retain documentation of CE compliance for two years beyond each renewal period.

Utah does not impose any supervision-specific continuing education (CE) requirements for psychologists who serve as clinical supervisors. Instead, Utah Licensed Psychologists must meet the general CE requirements for license renewal under Utah Admin. Code R156-61-302h. Utah psychologists must complete 48 hours of CE every two-year renewal cycle (Utah’s biennial cycle runs October 1 of each even-numbered year through September 30 of the next even-numbered year, with completion due by September 30 of even-numbered years). Within the 48 hours, at least 6 hours must be in ethics and law. Utah also allows up to 10 hours of CE credit for approved professional activities such as providing supervision to psychology residents or teaching qualifying psychology coursework/trainings, and limits distance learning/online CE to no more than 18 hours per cycle. Online CE must include an assessment (e.g., quiz/exam) and a completion certificate, and must be offered or approved by the APA or a state psychological association. Psychologists must retain CE documentation for at least 4 years after the cycle ends, and CE requirements may be pro-rated for new licensees who are licensed mid-cycle.
