Virginia CEU Requirements

Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) in Virginia must renew their license every year and are required to complete 20 hours of continuing education (CE) annually. Of these, at least 2 hours must focus on ethics, Virginia laws, or professional standards in behavioral health. Additionally, counselors may earn up to 2 CE hours by volunteering—providing free counseling to low-income individuals through public health departments or free clinics—at a rate of 1 CE hour per 3 hours of service.

Telehealth Certification Institute, LLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6693. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Telehealth Certification Institute, LLC is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) in Virginia are required to renew their license annually and must complete 20 hours of CE per year to remain in good standing. At least 2 of these hours must be in ethics, legal standards, or professional conduct relevant to behavioral science. LMFTs may fulfill up to 2 CE hours by delivering uncompensated counseling services to low-income individuals through qualifying clinics or local health departments—3 hours of volunteer work equals 1 CE hour.

Virginia Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) must meet both initial training requirements to supervise Residents and annual LMFT CE requirements to maintain their license and eligibility to supervise.

Before supervising Residents in Marriage and Family Therapy, LMFTs must complete supervision training as outlined in 18VAC115-50-60(C). This requirement can be fulfilled through one of the following pathways:

• Three graduate-level credit hours (or 4.0 quarter hours) in clinical supervision, OR
• 20 hours of continuing education (CE) in clinical supervision from a provider approved under 18VAC115-50-96

This training is required only once prior to beginning supervision and does not need to be repeated for license renewal.

To maintain an active LMFT license—and by extension, continue serving as a clinical supervisor— Virginia requires 20 hours of continuing competency CE each year, as specified in 18VAC115-50-95(A). This must include:

Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) in Virginia must renew their license every two years and complete 30 hours of continuing education (CE) per renewal cycle. At least 6 of those hours must cover ethics, standards of practice, or Virginia laws applicable to social work. LBSWs and LMSWs must complete 15 CE hours every two years in even-numbered years, including 3 mandatory hours in ethics or law. Up to 2 CE hours may be earned through volunteer social work for underserved communities (1 CE hour for every 3 volunteer hours).

To become a board-approved clinical supervisor in Virginia, you must first complete professional training in supervision, which can be satisfied in one of two ways:

• A graduate-level, three-credit course in supervision, or
• 14 hours of supervision-specific continuing education (CE) from a provider approved under 18VAC140-20-105.

To maintain approval as a clinical supervisor in Virginia, you must complete at least seven (7) hours of continuing education in supervision within the five years immediately preceding registration of supervision. These CE hours must be supervision-specific, delivered by a provider approved under 18VAC140-20-105.

Licensed Clinical Psychologists in Virginia must renew their license annually and are required to complete 14 hours of continuing education (CE) each year. Within this total, at least 1.5 hours must focus on ethics, laws, and professional regulations governing psychology in Virginia. A minimum of 6 hours must be completed in face-to-face or real-time interactive formats—this includes live webinars or events that allow direct interaction with instructors. The remaining hours may be completed through self-paced or asynchronous study.

Virginia does not impose any supervision-specific continuing education (CE) requirements for psychologists who serve as clinical supervisors. Instead, to remain eligible to supervise, you must keep your Virginia psychologist license active by meeting the Board’s annual renewal CE requirements. Under 18VAC125-20-121(A), licensees must complete 14 hours of board-approved CE each year, including at least 1.5 hours in courses emphasizing ethics, laws, and regulations governing the profession of psychology. If you earn more than 14 hours, you may carry forward up to 7 excess hours to the next annual renewal cycle. 18VAC125-20-121(B)(1) also requires that at least 6 of the 14 hours be earned through face-to-face or real-time interactive educational experiences (i.e., you have the opportunity to interact with the presenter during the presentation). Licensees must maintain original CE documentation for 4 years, and the Board may conduct random audits after each renewal period to verify compliance.
