Virginia Licensed Professional Counselor Renewal Information

Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) in Virginia must renew their license every year and are required to complete 20 hours of continuing education (CE) annually. Of these, at least 2 hours must focus on ethics, Virginia laws, or professional standards in behavioral health. Additionally, counselors may earn up to 2 CE hours by volunteering—providing free counseling to low-income individuals through public health departments or free clinics—at a rate of 1 CE hour per 3 hours of service.

Specific Continuing Education Requirements:

  1. Ethics / Laws / Standards:
    • Hours Required: 2 CE
      • Source: 18VAC115-20-105(A). “A minimum of two of these hours shall be in courses that emphasize the ethics, standards of practice, or laws governing behavioral science professions in Virginia.”
  2. Volunteer Counseling (Pro Bono Credit):
    • Hours Allowed: Up to 2 CE
      • Source: 18VAC115-20-105(E). “Up to two hours of the 20 hours required for annual renewal may be satisfied through delivery of counseling services, without compensation, to low-income individuals... One hour of continuing education may be credited for three hours of providing such volunteer services.”

Telehealth Certification Institute, LLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6693. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Telehealth Certification Institute, LLC is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

NBCC CE hours are accepted by the Virginia Board of Counseling.
