Washington CEU Requirements

Washington Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs) and Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) must complete 32 hours of continuing education every two years, including at least 6 hours in professional ethics and law and 2 hours in professional roles and boundaries (the boundaries hours must be taken separately from ethics). All licensed counselors must also complete 2 hours of health-equity training every four years consistent with WAC 246-12-830. In addition, at least once every six years, licensees must complete 6 hours in suicide assessment, treatment, and management; the first suicide-prevention training must be completed during the first full CE period after initial licensure, and beginning July 1, 2017 (and for subsequent trainings after July 1, 2021) the course must be selected from the department’s model list. The 6 suicide-prevention hours count toward the 32-hour CE total. (WAC 246-809-630(3)(a)–(d)(iv); 246-809-615; 246-12-830.)

To serve as a clinical supervisor for Associate Marriage and Family Therapists (AMFTs) in Washington, you must meet the supervision training standards outlined in WAC 246-809-134.

Before providing supervision, you must complete:

• ✅ At least 15 clock hours of training in clinical supervision, which may be earned through:
  • A supervision-focused CE course
  • Supervision-of-supervision
  • A combination of these learning methods
• ✅ At least 25 hours of experience in supervising clinical practice
• ✅ Alternatively, if you are an AAMFT-approved supervisor, you automatically qualify

Washington does not require supervision-specific CE to continue supervising. However, to remain eligible, your LMFT license must be active and in good standing, which means completing the general CE requirements for license renewal every two years, as outlined in (WAC 246-809-630):

✔ 32 total CE hours, including:

• 6 hours in law and ethics (may include topics under RCW 18.130.180)
• 2 hours in professional roles and boundaries (separate from ethics hours)
• 6 hours in suicide assessment, treatment, and management (every 6 years, must be on the DOH model list — WAC 246-809-615)
• 2 hours in health equity (every 4 years, must meet WAC 246-12-830)

• Washington requires 6 hours of suicide assessment, treatment, and management CE every six years, and those hours must be completed through a training program on the Washington Department of Health’s Model List (per WAC 246-809-615).

Washington requires all prospective clinical supervisors to complete 15 clock hours of supervision-specific training before providing licensure supervision. This requirement may be met through one or more of the following:

• A supervision course
• Continuing education credits (CE) in clinical supervision
• Supervision of supervision
• Or a combination of these methods

In addition to the training requirement, supervisors must have 25 hours of experience providing clinical supervision. These prerequisites are outlined in WAC 246-809-134 and must be met prior to beginning supervision.

While Washington does not require supervision-specific CE to maintain supervisor eligibility once approved, LICSWs must still meet the general license renewal requirement of 32 CE hours every two years, which includes:

• 6 hours in professional ethics and law
• 2 hours in professional roles and boundaries
• 2 hours in health equity training (every 4 years)
• 6 hours in suicide assessment, treatment, and management (every 6 years)

🔎 Important Note: Washington's health equity and suicide prevention CE must be completed through state-approved training programs listed on the official Model List. These specific courses may not be available through national CE providers like TCI.

Licensed psychologists in Washington must complete and document 60 hours of continuing education (CE) every three years. These 60 hours must include at least four hours in ethics, two hours in health-equity training, and one hour for the jurisprudence examination. The jurisprudence exam must be taken and passed within the psychologist’s first CE cycle after initial licensure; in subsequent cycles, taking and passing the exam is optional and may count for one CE hour per cycle. In addition, psychologists must complete six hours of training in suicide assessment, treatment, and management every six years, and this training must be selected from the Department of Health’s Model List of approved suicide-prevention courses.

Washington does not impose extra “supervisor-specific” CE for psychologists who supervise; you simply maintain your psychologist license by meeting the state’s general renewal CE requirements. Under WAC 246-924-230, licensed psychologists must complete 60 hours of continuing education every three years, including at least 4 hours in ethics, 2 hours in health equity (which must meet the content standards in WAC 246-12-830, including implicit-bias training), 6 hours in suicide prevention at least once every six years (must meet WAC 246-924-255 standards and be on the Department of Health Model List), and 1 hour for the jurisprudence exam during your first CE cycle (optional in later cycles, with 1 CE hour if retaken). These topic requirements are included within (not added on top of) the 60-hour total, and psychologists should retain completion documentation because the Department may audit CE compliance.
