New York CEU Requirements

Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs) in New York must renew their licenses every three years, with the license expiration date falling on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. Beginning January 1, 2017, LMHCs are required to complete 36 hours of approved continuing education (CE) during each triennial registration period. All CE coursework must be completed through providers approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). Within the 36-hour requirement, no more than 12 CE hours may be earned through self-study educational activities, ensuring that the majority of continuing education is completed through structured, NYSED-approved learning experiences.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) in New York must renew their licenses every three years, with the expiration date falling on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. As of January 1, 2017, LMFTs are required to complete 36 hours of approved continuing education (CE) during each triennial registration period. All CE must be completed through providers approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). Within each three-year cycle, no more than 12 hours may be earned through self-study educational activities, requiring the majority of CE to be completed through live or interactive formats as defined by NYSED.

While there are no continuing education (CE) requirements specifically for clinical supervisors, you must complete CE to keep your license active—and therefore remain eligible to supervise limited permit holders in New York.

Pursuant to 8 CRR-NY 79-10.8, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) in New York are required to complete 36 hours of NYSED-approved continuing education every three years as part of their license renewal.

• Of those 36 hours, no more than 12 hours may be completed through self-study activities.
• CE courses must be offered by providers approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED).
• Coursework must be relevant to the professional practice of marriage and family therapy.

As of January 1, 2015, both LMSWs and LCSWs must complete 36 hours of continuing education (CE) during each triennial registration period. New York does not require supervision-specific CE hours to become or remain a qualified LCSW clinical supervisor. However, to maintain your LCSW license—and remain eligible to supervise—you must complete 36 continuing education (CE) hours every three years, as required by the New York State Education Department (NYSED).

Up to 12 of these hours may be completed in the area of clinical supervision or related topics.

Licensed Psychologists in New York must renew their licenses every three years, with the license expiring on the last day of the licensee’s birth month. Beginning January 1, 2021, psychologists are required to complete 36 hours of continuing education (CE) during each triennial registration period. To be accepted, all CE coursework must be completed through providers approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). These providers are approved through an application process, required fees, and compliance with Education Law and Commissioner’s Regulations. Importantly, only courses taken on or after January 1, 2021 from NYSED-approved providers may be applied toward meeting the CE requirement.

New York does not impose supervision-specific continuing education (CE) requirements for psychologists who serve as clinical supervisors. Supervisors must, however, meet the general CE requirements applicable to all licensed and registered psychologists to maintain an active registration and remain eligible to supervise. Under 8 NYCRR § 72.6, psychologists must complete 36 hours of approved continuing education during each three-year registration period, including at least 3 hours in professional ethics that specifically address New York laws, rules, and regulations. CE must be completed through NYSED-approved psychology CE providers, and no more than one-third of the required hours (12 hours) may be earned through self-study or independent study, with the remaining hours completed through live or other acceptable interactive formats. Psychologists must retain CE documentation for at least six years and are subject to audit by NYSED.

To support psychologists in meeting these requirements while strengthening supervisory competence, the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers NYSED-approved continuing education that counts toward the general 36-hour requirement.
