Alaska Marriage and Family Therapists Renewal Information

In Alaska, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT) are required to renew their licenses every two years, with the current license period expiring on December 31 of even-numbered years.

The Alaska Board of Marital & Family Therapy stipulates that LMFTs who have been licensed for at least 18 months during the concluding license period must complete 45 hours of continuing education (CE).

Specifically, the CE requirements include at least 2 CE hours in Ethics, 2 CE hours in Addictions, 2 CE hours in Cross-Cultural Education, and 2 CE hours in issues related to Domestic Violence.

Additionally, LMFTs looking to practice Teletherapy must complete an initial 4 CE hours training covering topics such as the appropriateness and theory of teletherapy, modes of delivery, legal and ethical issues, handling online emergencies, and best practices including informed consent.

Telehealth Certification Institute, LLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6693. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Telehealth Certification Institute, LLC is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

NBCC CE hours are accepted by the Alaska Board of Marital and Family Therapy.

Alaska Social Workers Renewal Information

In Alaska, Licensed Social Workers across various designations including LBSW, LMSW, and LICSW must renew their licenses every two years, adhering to the guidelines set by the Alaska Board of Social Work Examiners.

Each social worker is required to complete 45 contact hours of continuing education (CE) acceptable to the board during each two-year licensing period. This requirement applies from the first renewal if the social worker has been licensed for at least 12 months during the concluding license period.

The CE requirements are comprehensive and include several specialized areas. Social workers must complete 6 CE hours focused on substance abuse education. For cultural competency, the first biennial renewal requires 6 CE hours specifically relating to Alaska Natives. From the second biennium onward, the requirement remains at 6 CE hours for cross-cultural education, but at least 3 of these hours must address issues specifically related to Alaska Natives. Ethics is another critical area, with 3 CE hours required in professional ethics. Additionally, 3 CE hours must be dedicated to teletherapy practice to equip social workers for effective remote counseling, and another 3 CE hours must focus on suicide education.

ASWB CE hours are accepted by the Alaska Board of Social Work Examiners.

Alaska Psychologists Renewal Information

In Alaska, psychologists are required to renew their licenses biennially.

As stipulated by the Alaska Board of Psychologists, each psychologist must accrue 40 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years, effectively averaging 20 hours each year.

The continuing education for psychologists includes specific requirements. Each psychologist must complete at least 3 CE hours in professional ethics during each licensing period. Additionally, a maximum of 20 CE hours (half of the total required CE hours) can be obtained through online self-study programs, such as formal correspondence or noninteractive electronic media programs. Furthermore, psychologists wishing to practice telepsychology in Alaska must complete an initial 4 CE hours of training in teletherapy.

(b) Credit awarded under this section may not exceed one half of the total hours required in any licensing renewal period.
Teletherapy:
- Hours Required: 4 CE (to start giving teletherapy services)

To be eligible to practice telepsychology with clients physically present in this state, a psychologist or psychological associate must meet the requirements under AS 08.01.085 and (2) complete general competency training in the practice of telepsychology, totaling a minimum of four hours.

The Alaska Board of Psychologist and Psychological Associate Examiners accepts courses from any provider who is approved by the American Psychological Association.
