Illinois Marriage and Family Therapists Renewal Information

Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) in Illinois must renew their licenses every two years, with each renewal cycle ending on February 28th of odd-numbered years. To qualify for renewal, licensees are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education (CE) during each renewal period. However, individuals renewing for the first time are exempt from this CE requirement. Within the 30 CE hours, certain topics are mandatory: 1 hour of Sexual Harassment Prevention Training, 1 hour of Implicit Bias Awareness Training, and starting January 1, 2025, a 1-hour Cultural Competency Training will be required every six years. Additionally, a 1-hour course on Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias must be completed once every six years. These topic-specific hours count toward the 30-hour requirement. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) permits a variety of CE formats, including live, interactive, and asynchronous (self-paced) options, offering flexibility for licensees to meet their obligations.

Sexual Harassment Prevention:

Illinois Social Worker Renewal Information

Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) in Illinois must renew their license every two years, with all licenses expiring on November 30 of each odd-numbered year. To be eligible for renewal, LCSWs are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education (CE) per cycle. First-time license renewals are exempt from this CE requirement. Of the 30 required hours, a minimum of 3 hours must focus on ethics. Additionally, Illinois mandates 1 hour of sexual harassment prevention training and 1 hour of implicit bias awareness training, both of which must be completed during every renewal period. Beginning January 1, 2025, LCSWs must also complete 1 hour of cultural competency training every six years, and starting January 1, 2023, 1 hour of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias training is required every six years. A one-time, 6-hour clinical supervision training is required for all currently licensed LCSWs beginning with the November 30, 2027 renewal or the second renewal after initial licensure, whichever comes later. CE hours may be completed through live, interactive, or asynchronous, self-paced formats, as long as the courses are provided by approved CE providers and are relevant to social work practice.

CE Requirements to Be Approved as a Clinical Supervisor

Illinois does not require supervision-specific CE to become or remain a clinical supervisor. However, maintaining an active LCSW license is required for supervision, and license renewal includes 30 CE hours every 2 years. These hours must include:

3 hours in Social Work Practice Ethics
3 hours in Cultural Competence
1 hour in Sexual Harassment Prevention
1 hour in Implicit Bias Awareness
1 hour in Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias (required once every three renewal cycles)

Illinois Psychologists Renewal Information

Licensed Clinical Psychologists (LCPs) in Illinois must renew their licenses every two years, with each renewal cycle ending on September 30 of even-numbered years. To qualify for renewal, licensees are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education (CE) during each renewal period. However, individuals renewing for the first time are exempt from this CE requirement. Within the 24 CE hours, certain topics are mandatory: 3 hours of Ethics, and beginning with renewals on or after September 30, 2026, an additional 3 hours in Diversity-Related Training. Illinois also requires 1 hour of Sexual Harassment Prevention Training, 1 hour of Implicit Bias Awareness Training, and starting January 1, 2025, a 1-hour Cultural Competency Training every six years. In addition, a 1-hour course on Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias must be completed once every six years. These topic-specific hours count toward the 24-hour requirement. CE Requirements to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor

Illinois does not require supervision-specific continuing education (CE) for psychologists to serve as clinical supervisors. However, all licensed psychologists must meet the state’s general CE requirements to maintain active licensure and remain eligible to supervise. According to 68 Ill. Adm. Code § 1400.60, psychologists must complete 24 hours of CE every two years, including 3 hours in ethics, 3 hours in sexual harassment prevention, and 1 hour of implicit bias awareness training.

Once every 3 renewal cycles (every 6 years) psychologists must complete 1 hour on Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias and 3 hours in cultural competency. Beginning September 2026, the state will also require 3 hours in diversity training as part of the 24-hour total.
