Illinois Licensed Professional Counselor Renewal Information

Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) in Illinois must renew their license every 2 years, with all licenses expiring on March 31 of odd-numbered years. Each renewal cycle requires 30 hours of continuing education, though first-time licensees are exempt from CE requirements for their initial renewal. Within each cycle, at least 3 hours must focus on ethics, and 1 hour each is required for sexual harassment prevention and implicit bias awareness. Starting in 2025, counselors must also complete 1 hour of cultural competency training and 1 hour on Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias every 6 years. Additionally, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors (LCPCs) must complete a one-time, 9-hour training in clinical supervision, due at their second renewal. CE hours can be fulfilled through various formats, including online and asynchronous learning, as long as the provider is approved.
