Indiana CEU Requirements

Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) in Indiana are required to renew their licenses on a biennial basis. Each renewal period is defined as a two-year cycle beginning April 1 of even-numbered years, with each licensure year running from April 1 through March 31 of the following year, making March 31 the effective expiration date at the end of the renewal cycle. For every two-year renewal period, LMHCs and LMFTs must complete a total of 40 continuing education (CE) units, calculated as not less than 20 CEUs per year. Within this requirement, Indiana mandates a specific ethics component: a minimum of one (1) CEU per year must focus on ethics and professional conduct, including boundary issues, and this ethics education must be obtained from a Category I provider, resulting in at least two ethics CEUs per renewal cycle.

To serve as a clinical supervisor in Indiana, MFTs must first meet the state’s supervisor eligibility requirements (outlined in 839 IAC 1-4-5), which include completing 30 hours of initial supervision training.

Once licensed and registered as a supervisor, you are required to meet ongoing continuing education (CE) requirements outlined in 839 IAC 1-6-3 to maintain your supervisor status. Indiana does not have a separate CE requirement for supervisors; instead, all licensed MFTs—whether they supervise or not—must fulfill the general CE requirements for license renewal.

These must include at least 10 Category I hours per year, with a minimum of 1 Category I hour in ethics annually (Source: 839 IAC 1-6-1). CE must be completed within the renewal period (no carryover allowed) and retained for four years.

Licensed Clinical Psychologists (LCPs) in Indiana, regulated by the Indiana Board of Psychology, renew their licenses on a two-year cycle, with all psychology licenses expiring on September 1 of even-numbered years and the renewed license remaining valid through August 31 two years later. During each two-year license period, psychologists who are endorsed as Health Service Providers in Psychology (HSPP) are required to complete 40 continuing education (CE) hours, with no exceptions for retired psychologists or those practicing outside Indiana. Within these 40 hours, 6 CE hours must be in ethics, and at least 3 of those ethics hours must be Category I. In addition, a minimum of 20 CE hours must be earned in Category I courses, while no more than 20 CE hours may be applied from Category II activities during the renewal period.

Indiana does not require supervision-specific continuing education (CE) to qualify or remain eligible to serve as a clinical supervisor. However, all licensed psychologists must meet the state’s general CE requirements to maintain an active license and remain eligible to supervise. According to the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (PLA), psychologists must complete 40 hours of continuing education every two years, including 6 hours in ethics, with at least 3 of those ethics hours completed as Category I activities. Indiana’s renewal framework also permits up to 20 hours of Category II CE within each biennial renewal period, provided all CE activities are relevant to the practice of psychology and meet PLA standards.
