Kansas CEU Requirements

Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors (LCPCs) in Kansas are required to renew their licenses every two years. Each renewal cycle mandates a minimum of 30 hours of approved continuing education (CE), specifically designed to enhance a counselor’s clinical skills, ethical judgment, and professional knowledge. Within these 30 hours, at least 3 hours must be dedicated to professional ethics, and 6 hours must focus on the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders —both of which are non-negotiable core requirements. Excess CE hours cannot be carried over to future renewal periods, making timely and accurate completion essential.

Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors (LCPCs) in Kansas must complete specific training in clinical supervision to qualify as an approved clinical supervisors. Kansas requires 30 continuing education (CE) hours every two years for license renewal, including 3 hours in professional ethics and 6 hours in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) and Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapists (LCMFTs) in Kansas are required to renew their licenses every two years. According to KAR 102-5-10, each licensee must complete 40 hours of documented and approved continuing education (CE) during each two-year renewal period. As part of this requirement, at least 3 hours must be formal training in professional ethics, and a minimum of 6 hours must be formal training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. These specific CE topics are mandatory and must be completed during every renewal cycle.

To serve as a clinical supervisor in Kansas, Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) must first meet the initial supervision training requirements established by the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board in K.A.R. 102-5-7.

🟢 Initial Supervision Training Requirements

Before applying for board approval, supervisors must complete one of the following:

• 15 hours of continuing education in clinical supervision, or
• One semester credit hour of graduate-level coursework in clinical supervision from a board-approved college or university

This training must cover the required content areas outlined in K.A.R. 102-5-7b, including supervision models, ethical and legal issues, cultural and contextual factors, supervisor-supervisee relationships, supervision structure and documentation, and Kansas MFT statutes and regulations.

⚠️ Note: The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) does not provide training on Kansas MFT statutes and regulations. Supervisors must complete that portion of the required training through another board-approved provider.

🔄 Ongoing CE Requirements After Supervisor Approval

Once approved as a clinical supervisor, you must continue to meet both general license renewal CE requirements and additional supervisor-specific CE requirements.

General CE for License Renewal (K.A.R. 102-5-10 and K.S.A. 65-6407(b))

All Kansas-licensed MFTs—including supervisors—must complete:

• 40 total CE hours every two-year renewal period
• Within those 40 hours:
  • At least 3 hours must be in professional ethics, and
  • At least 6 hours must be in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders

Additional CE Required for Supervisors (K.S.A. 65-6414)

In addition to the 40 hours above, board-approved clinical supervisors must complete:

• At least 3 hours of continuing education related to the enhancement of supervisory skills,
• Including at least 1 hour focused on ethics in supervision

This supervision-specific CE requirement is ongoing and applies to every renewal cycle.

Licensed Baccalaureate Social Workers (LBSWs) and Licensed Master Social Workers (LMSWs) in Kansas are required to renew their licenses every two years, as outlined by the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board (KSBSRB). Each renewal cycle requires the completion of 40 hours of continuing education (CE). As part of this requirement, all social workers must complete 3 hours of ethics training during every renewal period. In addition, LMSWs must also complete 6 hours of CE focused on the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. For those renewing their license for the first time, Kansas law mandates a one-time requirement of 6 hours of social worker safety awareness training. However, if this safety training was previously completed under an earlier level of licensure, it does not need to be repeated.

While Kansas does not impose supervision-specific CE requirements for LSCSWs, all licensed social workers must complete 40 hours of continuing education every two years, including. Kansas law also requires 6 hours of Social Worker Safety Awareness Training for social workers renewing their license for the first time; this training is part of the 40-hour CE total and applies only to first-time renewals (those who renewed a current license prior to January 1, 2011 are exempt).

Licensed Psychologists (LPs) in Kansas are required to renew their licenses every two years, as stated in KAR 102-1-15. Each renewal cycle requires the completion of 50 hours of continuing education (CE) earned in the two years preceding the application for renewal. If the renewal period is less than the full two years, the CE requirement is prorated at a rate of one-third of the total hours for every six months since the date of licensure or the most recent renewal. Additionally, licensees who are newly licensed within six months of the license expiration date are exempt from the CE requirement for their first renewal period. Of the total CE hours, at least 3 hours must be dedicated to professional ethics, and a minimum of 6 hours must cover the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. All continuing education content must be clearly related to the enhancement of psychology practice, values, skills, or knowledge.

Kansas does not require supervision-specific continuing education (CE) to qualify or remain eligible to serve as a clinical supervisor. Instead, psychologists who supervise must meet the state’s general CE requirements for license renewal, as set forth in Kansas Administrative Regulations (K.A.R.) 102-1-15. Licensed psychologists are required to complete 50 hours of continuing education every two years, prorated for shorter renewal periods, including at least 3 hours in professional ethics and at least 6 hours related to the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. These CE requirements apply to all licensed psychologists and are not tied to a separate supervisor credential; maintaining compliance with them is necessary to remain eligible to supervise clinical training and postdoctoral experience in Kansas.
