Maine CEU Requirements

Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) in Maine are required to renew their licenses every two years, with the renewal deadline based on the initial license issue date. To maintain licensure, professionals must complete 55 hours of Continuing Education (CE) during each renewal cycle. Of these, at least 4 hours must be specifically focused on ethics, covering topics outlined in the Board Rules Chapter 7-A Code of Ethics. For those completing their first license renewal, there is a mandatory one-time requirement of 12 CE hours in family or intimate partner violence, as required by Title 32 §13860. This training is essential for ensuring competence in addressing issues of domestic violence in clinical practice.

To serve as a clinical supervisor in Maine, you must meet one of the following qualification pathways:

• Experience Pathway: At least 5 years of licensed clinical practice (no more than 2 under conditional license)
• Certification Pathway: Hold a national certification in supervision (e.g., AMFTRB Approved Supervisor)
• Training Pathway: Complete 30 contact hours of supervision-specific training and have at least 1 year of full licensure beyond the conditional level

To maintain eligibility to supervise, you must also meet Maine’s general license renewal requirements for LMFTs:

• 55 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years
• At least 4 hours must address Code of Ethics topics
• A one-time 12-hour requirement in family or intimate partner violence education, due at your first license renewal (pursuant to §13860(2))

Note: You may apply no more than 5 contact hours from informal home study or prerecorded programs, combined, toward the 55-hour requirement.

Licensed Social Workers (LSWs) in Maine must renew their license every two years, with the renewal occurring in the same month as the initial license issuance. During each renewal cycle, LSWs are required to complete 25 hours of continuing education (CE) in accordance with Board Rules Chapter 14. Within this total, at least 4 CE hours must be completed in social work ethics, ensuring ongoing adherence to professional and ethical standards. In addition, LSWs completing their first license renewal must satisfy a one-time requirement of 12 contact hours in family or intimate partner violence, as mandated under Title 32, §7060.

To become a certified clinical supervisor in Maine, LCSWs must complete 24 hours of documented training in clinical supervision, which must include:

• 6 hours in skills assessment and evaluation
• 6 hours in counselor development
• 6 hours in management and administration
• 6 hours in professional responsibility

In addition, Maine law requires all LCSWs to complete a one-time, 12-hour CE requirement in family or intimate partner violence, pursuant to Title 32, §7060.

Once certified, LCSWs must complete 25 CE hours every two years to maintain licensure, including at least 4 hours focused on ethics. While supervision-specific CE is not required for renewal, it is strongly recommended to support high-quality, ethical supervision and compliance with evolving best practices.

ASWB CE hours are accepted by the Maine State Board of Social Worker Licensure.

Licensed Psychologists (LPs) in Maine are required to renew their license every two years, with renewal applications submitted in even-numbered years. As part of the renewal process, psychologists must complete 40 hours of approved continuing professional education (CPE) that is directly related to the practice of psychology. Of these 40 hours, at least 3 hours must focus on ethics, ensuring psychologists remain up to date with professional standards and responsibilities. Additionally, a minimum of 20 hours must be earned in the licensee’s current areas of practice or anticipated future areas of specialization, supporting continued competency in relevant domains.

Maine requires licensed psychologists who serve as clinical supervisors to meet both general continuing education (CE) requirements for license renewal and specific supervision-related training obligations. Under the Maine Board of Examiners of Psychologists Rules, Chapter 8, licensed psychologists must complete 40 hours of continuing professional education every two years. Within those 40 hours, at least 3 hours must be in ethics or professional conduct, and at least 20 hours must relate to the psychologist’s current or anticipated areas of practice. Importantly, if a psychologist performs any supervisory functions, Maine requires that a minimum of 3 CE hours per renewal cycle be earned in the skills and principles of supervision. This supervision-focused training counts toward the 40-hour total and is required for continued eligibility to supervise.

Psychologists may also choose individual clinical supervision CE courses to target specific supervision competencies and efficiently meet Maine’s supervision training requirement while strengthening confidence and effectiveness as clinical supervisors.
