Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs) in Massachusetts are required to complete 30 contact hours of Continuing Education (CE) every two years as part of the license renewal process. Although not mandatory, the Board encourages licensees to include at least 3 hours in ethics and 3 hours in anti-discrimination training within each renewal cycle. Additionally, LMHCs who supervise the clinical work of students, interns, or others must complete 3 contact hours in supervision training

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) in Massachusetts must complete 30 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) every two-year licensure cycle to maintain active status. For therapists in their first licensure cycle, CEU requirements are prorated based on license issue date: 22.5 CEUs if issued between January 1–June 30 of an even year, 15 CEUs if issued between July 1–December 31 of an even year, and 7.5 CEUs if issued between January 1–June 30 of an odd year. All LMFTs are also required to complete a Board-approved training in domestic and sexual violence; this training is mandatory but only needs to be completed once and counts for 2 CEUs in the cycle it is taken.

In Massachusetts, all licensed social workers must complete Continuing Education (CE) every two years to renew their license, with CE hour requirements based on license type: 30 hours for LICSWs, 20 hours for LCSWs, 15 hours for LSWs, and 10 hours for LSWAs. As part of this requirement, all licensees must complete a minimum of 2 CE hours in anti-racism focusing on systemic oppression, and 1 CE hour in anti-discrimination addressing bias related to identity factors such as race, gender, disability, and immigration status. These hours are included within — not in addition to — the total CE requirement.

Licensed Independent Clinical Social Workers (LICSWs) are automatically authorized to provide clinical supervision once licensed or licensure-eligible. Massachusetts does not require any specific supervision training or CE hours before beginning to supervise.

Massachusetts LICSWs must complete 30 CE credit hours every two years to maintain their license, which qualifies them to provide clinical supervision in Massachusetts. While the Board does not require supervision-specific CE, incorporating supervision training is a best practice—especially for LICSWs who supervise LCSWs working toward independent licensure.

These 30 CE hours must include:

• 2 CE hours in anti-racism, with a focus on oppression
• 1 CE hour in anti-discrimination, addressing oppression related to ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, political belief, religion, immigration status, and/or mental or physical ability

These three hours are included within—not added on to—the required 30 CE hours.

Under 258 CMR 31.04, CE activities must also contribute to professional competence and relate to areas such as clinical practice, ethics, law, cultural competence, human behavior in the social environment, professional standards, social policy, or other directly relevant topics. CE may be earned through workshops, online courses, conferences, or other programs approved by recognized entities.

For LCSWs, the Board requires 20 CE credit hours every two years, which must also include the same required 2 hours of anti-racism and 1 hour of anti-discrimination content as part of the 20-hour total. While completing these CE requirements is essential for maintaining LCSW licensure, they do not authorize LCSWs to provide clinical supervision; only LICSWs may supervise under Massachusetts law.

Telehealth Certification Institute LLC, #1609, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 05/02/2024 – 05/02/2027.

Licensed Psychologists (LPs) in Massachusetts are required to complete 20 Continuing Education (CE) credits during each two-year renewal cycle in order to maintain their license in good standing. All CE activities must comply with Board standards and should be relevant to the practice of psychology.

Massachusetts does not require supervision-specific continuing education (CE) for psychologists to qualify for or maintain eligibility as clinical supervisors. Instead, psychologists who supervise must comply with the state’s general CE requirements for psychology license renewal, as set forth in 251 CMR 4.03. Licensed psychologists in Massachusetts are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of continuing education every two years. CE activities must be psychological in content or directly relevant to the science or practice of psychology and must be obtained through Board-recognized providers, such as APA-approved sponsors or other entities approved by the Board. Massachusetts also allows up to 10 CE hours per renewal cycle to be satisfied through qualifying publications, such as authored books, book chapters, or refereed journal articles. Maintaining compliance with these general CE requirements is essential to remain in good standing with the Board and eligible to supervise pre-licensed psychology trainees.
