Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) in the state of Michigan are not currently required to complete Continuing Education (CE) hours as a condition for license renewal. The license renewal cycle occurs every 3 years.

Telehealth Certification Institute, LLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6693. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Telehealth Certification Institute, LLC is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) in Michigan must renew their license every 3 years, with renewal applications submitted through the MiPLUS portal and a renewal fee of $181.80. While Michigan does not require continuing education (CE) hours for license renewal, two mandatory trainings apply. All licensees must complete a one-time Human Trafficking Training prior to their first renewal, as required by Administrative Rule 338.7202. In addition, LMFTs must complete Implicit Bias Training—1 hour for each year of licensure during the current renewal cycle. This training is not required for renewals prior to June 1, 2022, but must be completed for each cycle thereafter.

Michigan does not require supervision-specific continuing education (CE) hours to serve as a clinical supervisor. However, all licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) must meet the state’s general license renewal requirements to keep their license in good standing and remain eligible to supervise.

To renew your MFT license in Michigan, you must:

• Renew your license on a three-year cycle through the MiPLUS system
• Complete a one-time human trafficking training prior to your first renewal (pursuant to Michigan Administrative Rule 338.7202)
• Complete implicit bias training — 1 hour per year of licensure for each renewal cycle

Licensed Social Workers in Michigan must renew their license every 3 years and are required to complete 45 hours of continuing education (CE) during each renewal cycle. This includes a minimum of 5 hours in ethics and 2 hours focused on pain and pain symptom management. In accordance with Rule R 338.2963, at least 50% of the required CE hours must be completed through live, synchronous contact, such as in-person or real-time virtual sessions.

Michigan does not require supervision-specific continuing education (CE) to become or remain a clinical supervisor. However, to maintain your active LMSW license—and therefore remain eligible to supervise—you must complete:

Telehealth Certification Institute LLC, #1609, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 05/02/2024 – 05/02/2027.

ASWB CE hours are accepted by the Michigan Board of Social Work.

Licensed Psychologists and Limited Licensed Psychologists in Michigan must renew their licenses every 2 years and are required to complete a minimum of 30 continuing education (CE) hours during each renewal period. As part of these requirements, at least 3 hours must focus on ethics, and at least 2 hours must cover pain and symptom management.

Michigan does not impose separate, supervision-specific continuing education (CE) requirements for psychologists who serve as clinical supervisors. Instead, supervisors must maintain an active psychology license by complying with Michigan’s general CE requirements for license renewal. Under Michigan Administrative Code R 338.2581, psychologists (including limited psychologists) must complete 30 hours of continuing education during the two years immediately preceding license renewal. Compliance is certified at renewal, and psychologists must retain CE documentation for at least four years after applying; failure to comply constitutes a violation of the Public Health Code.

The content and limits for these 30 hours are set forth in R 338.2583 and include the following: no more than 12 CE hours may be earned in a single 24-hour period, there is no limit on online CE hours, and psychologists must complete at least 3 hours in ethics and at least 2 hours in pain and symptom management (MCL 333.18233) during each renewal cycle. In addition, implicit bias training completed within the two-year renewal period may be counted toward the 30-hour requirement if it meets the standards of R 338.7004. Maintaining compliance with these general CE rules is required to remain in good standing and eligible to supervise supervised clinical experience in Michigan.
