Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) in Minnesota are required to renew their license every two years, and must complete at least 40 clock hours of board-approved continuing education (CE) during each two-year renewal cycle. As part of this requirement, a minimum of 4 CE hours must be dedicated to cultural competency training, which includes topics such as cultural awareness, diversity, oppression, and cultural humility. For the first four years of licensure, counselors must also complete 12 additional postgraduate semester credit hours in counseling, unless they have already reached the 60-credit maximum. Notably, graduate coursework completed during the initial four years may count toward the 40 CE hour requirement, with conversion allowed at 15 CE hours per semester credit hour or 10 CE hours per quarter credit hour.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) in Minnesota are required to renew their license every two years, with each renewal cycle ending on December 31 of odd-numbered years. In accordance with Minnesota Rule 5300.0320, LMFTs must complete 40 hours of continuing education (CE) during each two-year cycle. This requirement includes a minimum of 3 CE hours in ethics and 4 CE hours in cultural competency, which helps ensure therapists maintain high standards in professional conduct and are equipped to serve clients from diverse backgrounds.

To become and remain a board-approved clinical supervisor in Minnesota, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) must complete both initial and ongoing continuing education (CE) requirements, as outlined by the Minnesota Board of Marriage and Family Therapy:

Before applying for board-approved supervisor status, you must complete 30 hours of supervision-specific education through one of the following pathways:

• A graduate-level supervision course (minimum of 3 semester credits) from a regionally accredited institution
• An AAMFT-approved supervisor training program (minimum 30 hours)
• A 30-hour supervision education course approved by the Minnesota Board

Once approved, supervisors must complete 40 hours of board-approved continuing education every two years (renewal due in odd-numbered years). This must include:

• At least 3 hours in ethics (MN Rule 5300.0320.2)
• At least 4 hours in supervision training and skills (MN Rule 5300.0170(D))
• At least 4 hours in cultural competency (MN Statute 148B.31(b))

⚠️ Important Note on Course Approval

While the programs listed below are designed to align with Minnesota’s required supervision content and hour benchmarks, they are not automatically approved by the Minnesota Board of Marriage and Family Therapy.

Per Minnesota Rule 5300.0320, Subparts 6–8, CE activities must be explicitly approved by the Board. This may occur in one of two ways:

• Sponsors (such as TCI) submit the course for board-wide approval (Subp. 7), or
• Licensees individually submit a course for CE approval (Subp. 8)

Supervisors intending to use these courses for either initial board-approved supervisor status or CE renewal must ensure board approval has been granted before applying them toward licensure.

Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) in Minnesota must renew their license every two years and are required to complete 40 hours of board-approved continuing education (CE) per renewal cycle. This includes a minimum of 2 CE hours in social work ethics and 4 CE hours in cultural responsiveness to ensure adherence to professional standards and cultural competence in clinical practice. Additionally, LCSWs who hold the LICSW credential must complete at least 12 CE hours in clinical content, a requirement updated from the previous 24-hour threshold as of August 1, 2020. Up to 50% of the required CE hours (20 hours) may be earned through independent learning methods such as asynchronous online courses, research, professional presentations, or other self-directed formats, provided they meet board criteria.

Licensed Independent Clinical Social Workers (LICSWs) in Minnesota must meet both initial and ongoing continuing education (CE) requirements to provide clinical supervision in compliance with Minnesota law.

Before providing clinical supervision to individuals working toward clinical licensure, LICSWs must complete 30 hours of supervision training. This training must be completed prior to the start of supervision and may be fulfilled through one of the following:

• Coursework from an accredited college or university, or
• Continuing education (CE) training that complies with Minnesota Statutes §§ 148E.130 and 148E.145

• Continuing education used to meet this requirement must follow § 148E.130, Subd. 1(4), which limits how many CE hours can be earned through independent learning—defined in § 148E.010, Subd. 7(d) as self-paced study without live interaction (e.g., on-demand courses, research, or presentations). This means only half of the 30 hours may be completed via non-interactive formats. The remaining hours must be completed through interactive or synchronous learning, such as live webinars or in-person sessions.

Once providing supervision, LICSWs (and any licensee who provides supervision) must meet ongoing continuing education requirements during each two-year licensure renewal period. Minnesota requires:

• 40 total CE hours every two years, including at least 6 hours specifically related to clinical supervision.
• Of the 40 required hours, all licensees need 2 hours in social work ethics and 4 hours in cultural responsiveness.

Licensed Psychologists (LPs) in Minnesota must renew their license every two years and are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of continuing education (CE) during each renewal period. All CE activities must be approved by the Minnesota Board of Psychology and completed within the two-year cycle preceding license renewal. While the board mandates the total number of CE hours, there are no topic-specific requirements listed in the current rule, giving psychologists flexibility in choosing content relevant to their professional practice.

Minnesota does not require supervision-specific continuing education (CE) for psychologists to serve as clinical supervisors. Instead, licensed psychologists must meet the state’s general CE requirements to maintain active licensure and remain eligible to supervise. Under Minn. R. 7200.3850, psychologists must complete 40 hours of approved CE every two years and submit an affidavit of compliance at renewal. While Minnesota does not mandate a specific number of ethics or supervision-designated hours within the 40-hour total, licensees are expected to practice within their areas of competence, which includes supervision when serving in that role. Psychologists must also retain CE documentation for eight years following the renewal date.
