New Mexico LPC and MFT Renewal Information

In New Mexico, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are required to renew their licenses on a biennial cycle, with the renewal period running from October 1 of the renewal year through September 30 of the expiration year. To remain in good standing, all licensees must complete 40 hours of continuing education (CE) during each two-year renewal period. Within these required hours, a minimum of 12 CE hours must be dedicated to ethics related to counseling and mental health practice.

CE Requirements to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor(MFT-S)

To serve as a clinical supervisor in New Mexico, applicants must meet initial CE requirements as outlined in N.M. Admin. Code § 16.27.19.10(A)(4). This includes completing:

  • 3 continuing education (CE) hours in counseling or therapy supervision, and
  • 6 CE hours in supervision-specific ethics (in addition to the ethics CE hours required for regular license renewal).

Alternatively, applicants may qualify by holding an applicable, recognized national supervision credential.

Once approved, supervisor certification is valid for up to two years and expires on September 30 of the renewal year. To renew the designation, supervisors must again complete:

Proof of CE completion must be submitted with the renewal application to maintain active supervisor status.

The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers flexible, self-paced online CE options that fully align with both initial and renewal supervision requirements. Supervisors may fulfill these CE hours through the comprehensive Clinical Supervision Certificate Program (49 CE hours) or by combining targeted courses such as:
