New Mexico CEU Requirements

In New Mexico, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are required to renew their licenses on a biennial cycle, with the renewal period running from October 1 of the renewal year through September 30 of the expiration year. To remain in good standing, all licensees must complete 40 hours of continuing education (CE) during each two-year renewal period. Within these required hours, a minimum of 12 CE hours must be dedicated to ethics related to counseling and mental health practice.

To serve as a clinical supervisor in New Mexico, applicants must meet initial CE requirements as outlined in N.M. Admin. Code § 16.27.19.10(A)(4). This includes completing:

• 3 continuing education (CE) hours in counseling or therapy supervision, and
• 6 CE hours in supervision-specific ethics (in addition to the ethics CE hours required for regular license renewal).

Alternatively, applicants may qualify by holding an applicable, recognized national supervision credential.

Once approved, supervisor certification is valid for up to two years and expires on September 30 of the renewal year. To renew the designation, supervisors must again complete:

• 3 CE hours in clinical supervision, and
• 6 CE hours in supervision ethics, as required by N.M. Admin. Code § 16.27.19.10(B)(2).

Proof of CE completion must be submitted with the renewal application to maintain active supervisor status.

Licensed Social Workers in New Mexico are required to renew their licenses every two years, in accordance with guidelines from the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department, Board of Social Work Examiners. As part of this renewal process, licensees must complete 30 hours of continuing education (CE) within each two-year period. Out of the total, at least 6 CE hours must focus on cultural awareness, covering topics relevant to diverse populations and ethical social work practice. Additionally, a minimum of 20 CE hours must be obtained through board-approved providers, such as the NASW, ASWB, NBCC, or other state-recognized boards.

✅ Initial CE Requirement to Become a Clinical Supervisor in New Mexico
To apply for approval as a clinical supervisor for LMSWs, New Mexico LCSWs must:

• Complete a minimum of 6 hours of board-approved clinical supervision training

This training must be completed before submitting the Supervisor Application.

🔄 Ongoing CE Requirements for LCSWs (Every 2 Years)
To maintain both licensure and supervisor status, New Mexico LCSWs must complete 30 CEUs, including:

• 20 CEUs from board-approved providers (e.g., NASW, ASWB, NBCC)
• 6 CEUs in cultural awareness
• Up to 10 CEUs may be self-directed (research, reading, teaching, etc.)
• 3 CEUs specifically related to clinical supervision (required only if you're an approved supervisor)

While TCI courses cannot be used for the initial 6-hour board-approved training, they can fulfill ongoing CE needs, including the 3-hour supervision CE requirement:

Telehealth Certification Institute LLC, #1609, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 05/02/2024 – 05/02/2027.

ASWB CE hours are accepted by the Board of Social Work Examiners.

Licensed psychologists in New Mexico are required to renew their licenses every two years, as outlined by the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department, Board of Psychologist Examiners. During each two-year renewal cycle, licensed psychologists and psychologist associates must complete 40 hours of continuing professional education (CPE). For those holding conditional or unrestricted prescribing authority, the requirement increases to 60 CPE hours per cycle.

Within the 40-hour requirement, at least 15 hours must be earned through Category I activities, which involve rigorous oversight and higher instructional standards. Additionally, psychologists must complete 4 hours in ethics, 4 hours in equity and inclusion (covering topics such as race, systemic racism, and structural inequality), and 2 hours in cultural diversity or health disparities. These topic-specific hours may be fulfilled through either Category I or Category II formats, offering flexibility in how the requirements are met.

New Mexico does not impose supervision-specific continuing education (CE) requirements for psychologists who serve as clinical supervisors. Supervisors must meet the general CE requirements applicable to all licensed psychologists to maintain an active license and remain eligible to supervise. Under the New Mexico Administrative Code (16.22.9 NMAC), licensed psychologists must complete 40 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) every two years (or 60 hours for psychologists holding a prescribing certificate). Of the 40 hours, at least 15 hours must be Category I activities (formal programs such as workshops, seminars, or live webinars), with the remaining hours permitted from Category II activities (including independent or home study). Required content areas include 4 hours in ethics, 2 hours addressing cultural diversity or health disparities, and 4 hours focused on equity and inclusion each renewal cycle (NMAC 16.22.9.9).

To support psychologists in meeting these requirements while strengthening supervisory competence, the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers APA-approved continuing education. TCI’s Clinical Supervision Certificate (CSC) Program (49 CE hours) and 30 CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle provide extensive supervision-focused education and may be applied toward the Category II (self-study) portion of New Mexico’s renewal requirements. However, neither the CSC Program nor the 30-hour bundle is designed to fulfill New Mexico’s specific required topic hours for ethics or the 4 hours in equity and inclusion, though each provides 1.5 CE hours related to cultural competency, which does not fully satisfy the state’s cultural diversity and equity requirements. To complete those mandated topic areas and the Category I live-interactive requirement, psychologists can browse TCI’s Cultural Competency Courses and Live Webinar offerings, which qualify as formal, interactive CE under New Mexico rules.

The New Mexico Board of Psychologist Examiners accepts courses from any provider who is approved by the American Psychological Association.
