North Carolina CEU Requirements

Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs) in North Carolina are required to renew their licenses every two years. To be eligible for renewal, counselors must complete 40 contact hours of continuing counselor education during each two-year cycle. At least 3 of these hours must focus specifically on ethics, reinforcing the importance of ethical practice in the profession. For counselors renewing a newly issued license with a term of less than two full years, the requirement is reduced to 30 contact hours, but the 3-hour ethics training remains mandatory. All contact hours must involve direct participation in a structured educational format, such as workshops, seminars, or courses. One Continuing Education Unit (CEU) equals 10 contact hours, and graduate-level coursework may also apply, with one semester hour equaling 15 contact hours and one quarter hour equaling 10.

In North Carolina, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors (LCMHCs) who are approved as Qualified Clinical Supervisors must complete 10 contact hours of continuing education in clinical supervision every two years to renew their supervisor status. These hours must focus specifically on supervision practices and support continued competence in supervisory roles, as outlined in 21 NCAC 53 .0209. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy Associates in North Carolina are required to renew their licenses annually. As part of each renewal cycle, licensees must complete 20 hours of continuing education (CE) in marriage and family therapy obtained after the prior renewal. Included within the 20-hour requirement is a mandatory 3 hours of ethics training focused on the provision of professional mental health services; this ethics training is not additional and counts toward the total CE hours. All continuing education must be completed within the one-year renewal period and be relevant to the practice of marriage and family therapy. Licensees are required to submit documentation of CE completion each year when renewing their license.

Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) in North Carolina must complete 40 contact hours of continuing education (CE) every two years in order to renew their license. Within those 40 hours, a minimum of 4 hours must focus specifically on ethics related to social work practice and ethical decision-making. If the renewal cycle is less than two years—such as for first-time licensees—the requirement is reduced to 30 contact hours, but the 4-hour ethics requirement still applies. Additionally, the Board places a limit on distance learning: no more than 20 of the required hours may be completed through distance education, which includes online courses and home study programs.

North Carolina does not require supervision-specific continuing education (CE) hours to become or remain a clinical supervisor. However, to keep your LCSW license active and remain eligible to supervise, you must meet the state’s general CE requirements as outlined by the North Carolina Social Work Certification and Licensure Board (NCSWCLB):

• 40 clock hours of CE every two years (or 30 hours if your renewal cycle is less than two years)
• At least 4 hours must focus on social work ethics
• Up to 20 hours (50%) may be completed through non-interactive distance learning (e.g., on-demand or home-study formats)
• Live interactive webinars count as face-to-face and do not count against the distance learning limit
• CE hours cannot be carried over to the next renewal cycle
• You must retain CE documentation for 3 years, as the Board may audit your records at any time

Licensed psychologists in North Carolina are required to complete 24 continuing education (CE) hours every two years as part of the license renewal process. Of these, at least 15 hours must be earned through Category A activities, which include structured programs such as workshops, seminars, and webinars provided by approved sponsors. Within the 15 Category A hours, psychologists must complete a minimum of 3 hours specifically focused on ethics in the professional practice of psychology. The remaining 9 hours may be completed in either Category A or Category B, giving licensees some flexibility in how they meet the total CE requirement.

North Carolina does not impose supervision-specific continuing education (CE) requirements for psychologists who serve as clinical supervisors. Supervisors must meet the general CE requirements applicable to all licensed psychologists to maintain an active license and remain eligible to supervise. Under 21 NCAC 54 .2104, licensed psychologists must complete 24 hours of continuing education every biennial renewal cycle (October 1 of an even-numbered year through November 30 of the next even-numbered year). Of the 24 hours, at least 15 hours must be earned from Category A sponsors (which include the APA and their approved sponsors), and 3 of those Category A hours must be in ethics, with the word “ethics” appearing in the course title. The remaining 9 hours may be Category A or Category B, and acceptable formats include in-person, online, correspondence, or approved presentations. CE hours may not be carried over to the next renewal cycle, and psychologists must maintain documentation in case of audit.
