North Dakota CEU Requirements

Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) in North Dakota are required to complete at least 30 hours of continuing professional education during the two years preceding the expiration date of their license. Within this total, a minimum of 3 hours must primarily focus on counselor ethics, ensuring practitioners remain grounded in ethical standards. Each continuing education hour must consist of 50 minutes of instructional time. Acceptable continuing education activities include attending professional meetings, conferences, and workshops, as well as taking graduate courses in counseling or other mental health disciplines.

In North Dakota, certified clinical supervisors must complete 30 hours of continuing education (CE) focused on clinical supervision every five years to renew their supervisor certification. This requirement, outlined in North Dakota Administrative Code 97-02-01-08, ensures that supervisors maintain their professional competency and stay current with best practices in supervision. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) in North Dakota must complete 30 hours of continuing education (CE) every 2 years as a condition for license renewal. Included in these requirements, at least 6 hours must focus specifically on ethics to promote high standards of professional conduct. CE activities may include live or approved home study programs directly related to the practice of marriage and family therapy. However, no more than 15 of the 30 hours may be earned through home study courses, which must feature an independently graded test component to qualify.

To become a board-approved clinical supervisor in North Dakota, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) must meet one of the following training options, pursuant to North Dakota Administrative Code Chapter 111-02-02-04:

• ✅ Complete a one-semester graduate-level course in MFT supervision from an accredited institution, or
• ✅ Complete a 30-hour CE course in clinical supervision.

To maintain licensure and supervisor status, LMFTs must meet the following continuing education (CE) standards every two years, under NDAC § 111-02-01-06:

30 CE hours total, including:

• ✅ 6 hours in ethics
• ✅ 3 hours in clinical supervision (required for supervisors; 10% of total)
• ✅ Maximum of 15 hours may be completed via self-study/home study that include an independently graded component

NDAC § 111-02-01-06.4 states that courses may not be counted toward a licensee's continuing education requirements unless it has been approved by the board.

Because CE must be approved by the North Dakota Board to count toward licensure renewal, licensees are responsible for verifying whether a specific course has been approved before applying CE credit toward supervisor designation or renewal requirements. TCI has not been pre-approved.

Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) in North Dakota are required to complete 30 approved continuing education (CE) contact hours every 2 years to maintain active licensure. Within the 30-hour requirement, at least 2 hours must focus on social work ethics, reinforcing professional standards and responsibilities. A maximum of 10 hours may be earned through independent learning, such as online courses without live interaction. For newly licensed social workers, only 15 hours are required if licensed between January 1 and June 30 of the odd-numbered year, while those licensed on or after July 1 of an odd-numbered year are exempt from CE requirements during that period.

North Dakota does not require supervision-specific CE hours to become or remain a clinical supervisor. However, to maintain your LCSW license—and remain eligible to supervise—you must meet the state’s general continuing education (CE) requirements, as outlined in North Dakota Administrative Code Chapter 75.5-02-03-07.

LCSWs must complete:

• 30 contact hours of CE every two-year renewal cycle
• At least 2 hours must focus on social work ethics
• No more than 10 hours may be earned through self-study or distance learning formats (independent learning)

According to North Dakota Administrative Code 75.5-02-03-07(2), course content should relate to the following:

• Theories and concepts of human behavior and the social environment
• Social work knowledge and skills
• Social work research or practice evaluation
• Social work ethics, or
• Cross-disciplinary courses directly relevant to social work practice or specialty

North Dakota requires supervision-specific continuing education (CE) for licensed psychologists who supervise psychology residents. To maintain an active license and remain eligible to supervise, psychologists must complete 40 hours of continuing education every two-year renewal cycle under North Dakota Administrative Code §66-03-01. At least 3 hours must be in ethics, law, or jurisprudence, and psychologists who serve as supervisors must also complete a minimum of 3 CE hours focused specifically on clinical supervision during each renewal cycle, which count toward the 40-hour total.
