Oregon CEU Requirements

In Oregon, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) must renew their licenses every two years, with the renewal and CE reporting deadline falling on the licensee’s birth month. Each 24-month renewal cycle requires a minimum of 40 clock hours of continuing education (CE), including 6 hours in ethics and Oregon law, 4 hours in cultural competency, and 2 hours in suicide risk assessment, treatment, and management.Newly licensed professionals are granted a 12-month exemption from CE requirements, with full CE obligations beginning after their first renewal. For those with odd-numbered licenses transitioning to biennial renewal in 2025, only 20 CE hours are required that year, with all topic-specific requirements proportionally reduced.

To maintain your status as a Board-approved clinical supervisor in Oregon, you must complete 3 hours of continuing education specifically related to clinical supervision every two years, as part of the Board’s 40-hour renewal requirement. To become and remain eligible to provide clinical supervision in Oregon as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), licensees must meet two distinct supervision-related CE requirements:

• Before applying for Supervisor Candidate status under OAR 833-130-0040, Oregon requires supervisors to complete 30 hours of clinical supervision training (must include systems theory for MFTs). This 30-hour training is an initial prerequisite to providing any clinical supervision to registered associates.
• In addition to the initial training, Oregon licensees who supervise registered associates — including all on the Supervisor Registry — must complete 3 hours of continuing education in clinical supervision during each two-year license renewal cycle, as outlined in OAR 833-080-0011.

This must include 6 hours in ethics and 6 hours in cultural competency. The Oregon Board of Licensed Social Workers allows flexibility in CE formats, with the licensing system tracking activities submitted throughout the renewal period to help professionals stay organized. LCSWs are required to retain CE documentation for at least 24 months following renewal and must provide certificates or records if selected for the Board’s random audit process.

To serve as a clinical supervisor in Oregon, Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) must meet both initial and ongoing CE requirements, as outlined by the Oregon Board of Licensed Social Workers. Before beginning supervision, you must maintain an Active or Semi-Retired LCSW license, which includes completing at least 6 hours of general CE (in addition to any supervision-specific CE needed) every two years for license renewal. You must also complete and report 15 hours of supervision-specific CE within the 5 years prior to starting supervision.

💡 The 15-hour training must focus on supervision practices and be from an ASWB-approved CE provider.

To maintain supervisor status, you must complete 6 hours of CE in supervision every 5 years, separate from general LCSW renewal requirements.
