Rhode Island CEU Requirements

In Rhode Island, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) and Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are required to complete 40 continuing education (CE) credits every two years to maintain active licensure. Within each two-year renewal cycle, a minimum of 20 CE credits must be earned through Category I activities, which consist of formal, structured learning such as graduate or post-graduate courses, live or virtual conferences, CE workshops, and approved web-based trainings.

Rhode Island does not impose separate ongoing continuing education (CE) requirements specifically for clinical supervisors. However, to be recognized by the Board as an approved supervisor under 216-RICR-40-05-11 § 11.3.6(B), an LMFT must meet the supervision-qualification requirements before providing supervision. A supervisor may qualify by being duly certified as a supervisor by AAMFT, or (if qualifying via the licensed LMFT pathway) by holding a Rhode Island LMFT license in good standing for at least five (5) years with at least five (5) years of clinical experience as a licensee and completing either (1) one graduate-level course in MFT supervision or (2) one MFT supervision course taken through AAMFT/RIAMFT. Separately, LMFTs must still meet Rhode Island’s standard license-renewal CE requirements in 216-RICR-40-05-11 § 11.3.12 to keep their license active and remain eligible to supervise.

To renew their license, MFTs must complete 40 continuing education credits every two years. Of these, at least 20 credits must come from Category 1 programs — structured, formal activities such as accredited workshops, graduate-level coursework, or other approved continuing education programs.

All CE must be relevant to the practice of marriage and family therapy or clinical mental health counseling. Licensees must retain documentation (including the course title, instructor, date, and number of hours) for at least four years and must provide this documentation if requested, including during a random audit.

In Rhode Island, Clinical Social Workers (CSWs) and Independent Clinical Social Workers (ICSWs) must complete 30 continuing education (CE) contact hours every two years to renew their licenses. These 30 CE hours must be completed within the preceding 24 months, with at least 24 hours earned through live, interactive, or synchronous learning formats classified as contact hours. Within the total requirement, licensees must complete a minimum of 3 contact hours in cross-cultural practice, including the alleviation of oppression, and a minimum of 3 contact hours in social work professional ethics.

Rhode Island does not require supervision-specific CE hours or a separate credential to provide clinical supervision as an LCSW or LICSW. However, 216-RICR-40-05-7.4.5(E) states that in order to maintain your license—and remain eligible to supervise—you must complete 30 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years, which must support clinical competence.

Other requirements for earning CE hours include:

• A minimum of three (3) hours in cross-cultural practice, including the alleviation of oppression
• A minimum of three (3) hours in social work professional ethics

Credit may be claimed for serving as a supervisor for students duly enrolled in a program of studies at an accredited social work program at a college or university in accordance with the following:

• A maximum of six (6) hours credit may be claimed during a renewal period for either the supervision of a master’s level social work student or for the supervision of a bachelor’s level social work student for a full academic year.

In Rhode Island, licensed psychologists must complete 24 continuing education (CE) credits every two years to renew their licenses. The CE cycle begins on July 1 and ends on June 30 of even-numbered years. At the time of renewal, psychologists must submit a signed statement attesting to the completion of 24 CE credits relevant to psychology, approved by the Board.

Rhode Island does not impose any supervision-specific continuing education (CE) requirements for psychologists who serve as clinical supervisors. Psychologists who supervise licensure candidates must instead meet the standard CE requirements for psychologist license renewal to remain eligible to supervise. Under 216-RICR-40-05-15.9, licensed psychologists in Rhode Island are required to complete 24 hours of continuing education every two years, with the biennial CE cycle running from July 1 of an even-numbered year through June 30 of the next even-numbered year. Approved CE activities must be relevant to the practice of psychology and offered by Board-recognized or nationally accepted sponsors. Psychologists must attest to completion of the required CE hours at renewal and retain documentation for at least four years in the event of audit.

While Rhode Island does not require a dedicated supervision CE course, many psychologists choose to pursue targeted training to strengthen their supervisory competence.
