Vermont CEU Requirements

Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors (LCMHCs), also known as Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs), in Vermont must renew their license every two years on the schedule established by the Vermont Office of Professional Regulation, with the renewal deadline listed on the license certificate. As a condition of renewal after the first two years of licensure, LCMHCs must complete 40 hours of continuing education earned within the two years immediately preceding renewal. Of the 40 required hours, at least 4 hours must be in professional ethics relevant to clinical mental health counseling, psychology, psychiatry, marriage and family therapy, or social work, while the remaining 36 hours must focus on the theory and practice of clinical mental health counseling. In addition, beginning with the January 2025 renewal cycle, licensees must complete at least 1 hour of continuing education in systematic oppression and anti‑oppressive practice or related areas such as cultural competency, cultural humility, or antiracism, as required by statute. Continuing education may be completed through live, synchronous virtual, or approved online formats, and licensees must retain documentation for four years in case of audit.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) in Vermont are required to renew their license every two years according to the renewal schedule set by the Office of Professional Regulation, with the specific deadline indicated on the license. Following the first renewal period, MFTs must complete 20 hours of continuing education within the two years prior to renewal. A minimum of 4 of the 20 hours must be in professional ethics applicable to marriage and family therapy, clinical mental health counseling, psychiatry, psychology, or social work, and the remaining hours must support competent clinical practice. Vermont law further requires that continuing education include one or more hours in systematic oppression and anti‑oppressive practice or related areas such as cultural competency, cultural humility, or antiracism. Approved continuing education may be completed through in‑person, synchronous virtual, or other structured learning formats recognized by the Board, and licensees must maintain continuing education records for four years in the event of an audit.

While there are no separate continuing education (CE) requirements specifically for clinical supervisors in Vermont, all licensed Marriage and Family Therapists must complete 20 hours of CE every two years to maintain their license and remain eligible to supervise. This includes at least 4 hours in professional ethics relevant to mental health practice.

Additionally, §4.28(d) encourages those who serve as supervisors to complete continuing education related to supervision, although this encouragement does not create a separate mandatory CE requirement.

Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs), also referred to in Vermont as Licensed Independent Clinical Social Workers (LICSWs), must renew their license every two years on the schedule determined by the Vermont Office of Professional Regulation, with the renewal deadline printed on the license. Vermont statute requires completion of continuing education during the two‑year renewal period, and authorizes the Director to require up to 20 hours of approved continuing social work education as a condition of renewal. The law mandates that continuing education include one or more hours focused on systematic oppression and anti‑oppressive practice or related areas such as cultural competency, cultural humility, or antiracism, and expressly allows synchronous virtual continuing education to count as live training.

Vermont does not require supervision-specific CE or a separate credential to serve as a clinical supervisor. However, to maintain your license—and remain eligible to supervise—you must complete 40 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years, which must include:

• 4 hours in professional ethics
• Coursework focused on clinical mental health theory and practice

Although not required, CE in supervision may be selected to strengthen your skills and support supervisee development. All CE must be completed within the two years preceding license renewal and must be properly documented for audit compliance. Acceptable CE providers include NBCC, ACA, AMHCA, APA, and AAMFT.

Telehealth Certification Institute LLC, #1609, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 05/02/2024 – 05/02/2027.

ASWB CE hours are accepted by the Vermont Office of Professional Regulation.

Licensed Psychologists (LPs) in Vermont must renew their license every two years under the renewal schedule established by the Office of Professional Regulation, with failure to renew by the expiration date resulting in automatic license expiration. At each renewal, psychologists are required to complete 60 hours of continuing education earned within the two years preceding renewal. Of the 60 hours, no fewer than 6 hours must be specifically devoted to professional ethics for psychologists, and at least 24 hours must be obtained through large group or formal presentation activities such as academic courses, conferences, workshops, or live interactive webinars. The remaining hours may be earned through approved small group or individual educational activities, subject to regulatory limits.

Vermont does not impose any additional “supervision-specific” continuing education (CE) requirements for psychologists who serve as clinical supervisors. Instead, supervisors must meet the same general CE requirements required of all licensed psychologists for renewal under the Vermont Board of Psychological Examiners’ Administrative Rules. At each renewal (every two years), psychologists must complete 60 hours of continuing education, including at least 6 hours specifically devoted to professional psychologist ethics (Rule 8.1(a)), and no more than 30 hours may be dedicated to any one topic (Rule 8.1(b)). Vermont also sets format limits: at least 36 of the 60 hours must be obtained through large-group/formal presentation activities (including interactive programs such as webinars), and no more than 24 hours may be earned through individual activities (e.g., independent study, readings, online CE courses) (Rule 8.8). Licensees must retain CE documentation for four years, and the Board conducts CE audits (including random audits), with corrective-plan requirements if deficiencies are found (Rule 8.9, 8.10).
