2 CE hours available for behavioral health clinicians completing the Online Self-Study

Healthcare professionals are often equipped to treat crises—but what if we could help clients prevent them altogether? This course teaches clinicians how to guide their clients, including fellow healthcare professionals, in creating personalized empowerment plans that identify early warning signs and build lasting wellness.

In this course, clinicians will learn how to collaborate with clients on an empowerment plan—a practical, proactive tool that helps prevent emotional, behavioral, and cognitive relapse by intervening early, before problems escalate. You’ll leave with a clear, adaptable framework you can use across a variety of client situations.

Elizabeth Hartshorn, LPC, MAC, is a seasoned clinician, clinical supervisor, and educator with more than 30 years of experience in mental health and addiction care. She has taught and mentored countless professionals and specializes in working with healthcare providers. Her Empowered Healer approach integrates evidence-informed strategies with personal insight, helping clinicians support their clients in cultivating resilience and recovery.

Elizabeth’s teaching style is practical and client-centered. In this course, she walks clinicians step-by-step through the process of co-creating empowerment plans with clients—tools that complement, but are distinct from, traditional treatment plans. Her approach emphasizes self-awareness, ritual, and early intervention for long-term impact.

Participants will explore the difference between empowerment and treatment planning; learn to recognize micro-level warning signs in physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral domains; and apply interventions tailored to “whispers, taps, and sledgehammer” phases of recovery. Additional topics include use of mood scales, daily recovery rituals, and the clinical utility of intention setting as an alternative to traditional goal setting.
