It’s All Focused: LEGO®-Based Play Therapy Techniques

Play therapy practitioners using LEGO® bricks in mental health treatment can help clients enhance communication and problem-solving skills by building models to externalize thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Participants will be introduced to combining directive play therapy with the use of LEGO® bricks to treat children, adolescents, adults, families, and couples. Utilizing this integrative approach to play therapy can meet the therapeutic needs of clients throughout the therapeutic process from rapport building to termination.

Introspective Brick Building: LEGO®-Based Play Therapy Techniques

Introducing LEGO® into play therapy practice can help individuals improve communication and problem-solving skills by building models to externalize thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Participants attending this LEGO®-based play therapy workshop will acquire creative skills to work with clients on connecting thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that may be contributing to negative interaction patterns with others. This workshop will discuss theory, research, and practical considerations for implementing LEGO® strategies into play therapy practice.

Implementing LEGO®-Based Play Therapy Online Using Storytelling & Metaphors

Combining the use of LEGOs and metaphors in play therapy practice can break down barriers that interfere with an individual’s ability to communicate problems. LEGOs, metaphors, and storytelling allows play therapy practitioners to access the inner world of clients to help them solve problems. Participants will explore the advantages of using metaphors in play therapy.

 It’s All Focused: LEGO®-Based Play Therapy Techniques

  • Discuss the benefits of incorporating LEGO® with focused interventions like solution-focused therapy and metaphors to use in play therapy sessions with clients.
  • Play therapy practitioners will explore the use LEGO® with clients through different stages of the therapeutic process.
  • Discuss materials and skills needed to incorporate LEGO® into play therapy practice.
  • Demonstrate at least 3 directive LEGO® models to assess and treat various emotional and behavioral issues that present in play therapy treatment.

Introspective Brick Building: LEGO®-Based Play Therapy Techniques:

  • Discuss the therapeutic benefits of intentionally incorporating LEGO® into play therapy practice.
  • Identify and discuss various social skills and interpersonal skills that can be developed by incorporating LEGO® use into play therapy practice.
  • Discuss limit setting for managing behavior in multiple play therapy settings.
  • Demonstrate the purposeful use of LEGO® in play therapy practice.

Implementing LEGO®-Based Play Therapy Online Using Storytelling & Metaphors:

  • Discuss the LEGO SERIOUS PLAY model and its connection to play therapy practice. 
  • Identify and discuss at least three ways storytelling and metaphors can be used in play therapy.
  • Identify and discuss the stages that metaphors move through when incorporating LEGOs and storytelling into play therapy to help clients communicate experiences.  
  • Demonstrate building LEGO models to help clients receiving play therapy to improve social and emotional functioning.

Althea T. Simpson, MBA, LCSW, RPT-S, is the founder of Brighter Day Therapeutic Solutions, Unicorn Life Training, and the Black Play Therapy Society. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor and Certified LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Facilitator.

She also facilitates skill enriching workshops to teach mental health professionals’ therapeutic techniques that can help empower their clients to move through the therapeutic process.
