This course is intended for clinicians who provide behavioral health services. This is a non-interactive, self-study course. Teaching methods for this course include recorded lectures, videos, a post-test, and a course evaluation. Course access and completion instructions. Gus is a certified alcohol and drug counselor practicing in the rural northwest corner of the state of Iowa. He currently works as a mental health therapist and substance counselor in private practice. He completed his master's in clinical mental health from Adler University in Chicago, IL., and is currently a Ph.D. student in Sociology at the University of Iowa pursuing research related to cultural and community support for marginalized populations. Gus specializes in marginalized populations, particularly LGBTQ+ and immigrant/refugee communities. As a multi-racial transgender man, he is no stranger to diversity and forms of oppression, particularly in the world of education and mental health services. Gus also has lived experience with substance use disorder, from which he celebrates nearly two decades of recovery. He offers professional development training in restorative practices that are equitable and just, workshops on cultural humility and education, and working with multicultural youth experiencing substance and mental health difficulties.
